However, those activities have not included testing Japanese missiles that are still under development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Expanded access to Australian ranges would therefore give Japan additional opportunities to conduct development and testing activities while increasing the practical military cooperation between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The defense ministers also discussed the progress of a new vessel being jointly developed for Australia, alongside broader cooperation in military training, operations and defense technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br><strong>Joint Laser Project<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The meeting came as Australia and Japan announced the successful completion of field trials for Project Boobook, their first joint defense-industry co-development initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The high-energy laser system was developed by Australia\u2019s Defense Science and Technology Group, Mitsubishi Electric Australia and Mitsubishi Electric Corporation. Trials were conducted in South Australia at the Cultana Training Area and DSTG Edinburgh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Australian officials said the project builds on more than 20 years of research and development by the Defense Science and Technology Group and could support future surveillance capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Richard Marles said the system provides an enhanced laser capability that could be used on land combat platforms and littoral platforms, potentially allowing incoming threats to be detected optically while improving protection and situational awareness. It is a practical example of the growing defence industrial partnership between Australia and Japan, as well as the opportunities that partnership creates for both nations,\u201d Conroy said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The project also has an industrial component.
