The work is scheduled to run from August 2026 through January 2031. The modification increases the cumulative value of the underlying contract to approximately $1.05 billion.

The contract covers the production of new Configuration 3, or C3, THAAD launchers. The announcement did not specify how many launchers will be produced or how the work will be divided geographically. It identified Sunnyvale as the contractor’s location and Huntsville as the location of the contracting authority.

The $211.4 million modification is designated P00082 under contract HQ0147-19-C-5001. Lockheed Martin Space, based in Sunnyvale, California, is the prime contractor, while the Missile Defense Agency in Huntsville, Alabama, is responsible for the contract.

The award is financed through UAE Foreign Military Sales funding. The contract announcement states that one offer was solicited and one offer was received.

The latest award differs from earlier modifications that focused primarily on sustaining the UAE’s existing THAAD force. Previous support included maintenance, logistics, training, repairs, software and hardware sustainment, engineering and other technical services. The new contract adds production of new launcher hardware to that long-term support relationship.

New THAAD Launchers

The new launchers will become part of the UAE’s existing THAAD force, which forms the upper tier of the country’s layered air and missile defense network.

THAAD is designed to intercept ballistic missiles during the terminal phase of their flight, both inside and outside the atmosphere. The system uses hit-to-kill technology, meaning its interceptor destroys an incoming missile through direct kinetic impact rather than using a conventional explosive warhead.

A typical THAAD battery combines mobile launchers and interceptors with the AN/TPY-2 X-band radar and fire-control and communications equipment. These components work together to detect, track, and engage incoming ballistic missile threats.

Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) Weapon System. (Image Credit: Lockheed Martin)

The launcher is a critical part of this architecture because it determines the system’s available firing capacity. Additional modern launchers can provide greater flexibility in positioning interceptors and help maintain the operational capacity of a battery during repeated engagements.

The MDA identifies Configuration 3 hardware as part of THAAD System Build 5.0, which includes broader mission-assurance improvements. The C3 hardware is being incorporated into the system’s continuing modernization effort and is intended to keep the ground component aligned with the evolving THAAD architecture.

UAE Expands Missile Defense Network

The UAE has operated THAAD for more than a decade and was the system’s first international customer. Lockheed Martin delivered the first UAE THAAD battery in 2015.

The country currently operates two THAAD batteries. The system has also been used operationally, with the UAE conducting the first known combat interception by THAAD in January 2022.

The UAE already had Patriot air defense systems before acquiring THAAD, giving the country a layered missile defense architecture. THAAD provides a high-altitude ballistic missile interception capability, while Patriot systems provide additional engagement options at lower altitudes.

This layered structure allows different systems to address threats within different parts of the engagement envelope rather than relying on a single missile defense system.

The UAE’s continued investment in THAAD reflects the importance it places on protecting strategic infrastructure from ballistic missile attacks. The country’s defense network is designed to protect military facilities and other critical infrastructure against a range of missile threats.

Modernizing THAAD Force

The move to Configuration 3 is part of the broader modernization of the THAAD system. The MDA’s System Build 5.0 incorporates C3 hardware alongside mission-assurance improvements.

The modernization is intended to ensure that key elements of the system remain compatible with its evolving architecture and capable of supporting current and future missile defense requirements.

The modernization is significant because missile defense depends on more than interceptor missiles alone. Radar detection, target tracking, discrimination, fire control, communications, and launcher availability must operate as a single engagement chain.

U.S. Army Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) launching station preparing to load onto a 4th Airlift Squadron C-17 Globemaster III at Fort Bliss, Texas, on Feb. 23, 2019. The new UAE procurement will allow the country to add C3 launchers while continuing to operate its existing THAAD architecture.

The contract also comes as demand for advanced ballistic missile defense systems remains strong in the region. Saudi Arabia has signed FMS cases for seven THAAD batteries, while the UAE and Saudi Arabia are identified as THAAD’s international customers.

Strategic Significance for UAE

The $211.4 million award represents more than routine maintenance of the UAE’s existing missile defenses. It marks a move toward modernizing the physical launcher component of the country’s THAAD force.

The new C3 launchers will provide additional equipment compatible with the evolving THAAD architecture and allow the UAE to maintain the system as a central element of its ballistic missile defense network.

The multi-year production schedule through January 2031 also demonstrates the long-term nature of the UAE’s commitment to THAAD. The new launchers will be introduced alongside continued sustainment of the existing force and the broader System Build 5.0 modernization effort.

The procurement highlights the continuing importance of layered missile defenses in the Gulf. As ballistic missile threats remain a major security concern in the region, the UAE is seeking to maintain multiple layers of protection rather than depending on a single interceptor system.

The new Lockheed Martin contract will therefore strengthen an already established UAE missile defense architecture while keeping its THAAD launcher fleet aligned with the latest system configuration.

According to IRIA defense experts, the procurement reflects the UAE’s continued effort to improve the resilience and long-term sustainability of its missile defense network as regional missile threats evolve.

Terminal High-Altitude Area Defense System (Image Credit: Lockheed Martin)

U.S. defense manufacturer Lockheed Martin has received a $211.4 million contract modification to manufacture new Configuration 3 Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) launchers for the United Arab Emirates, expanding and modernizing the country’s ballistic missile defense capability.

"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paywalled_content":false
_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false
[44,1,125
768,6,324,356,5,31,113,305,7,141
post-37189","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-middle-east","category-news","category-united-states","tag-air-defense","tag-defense","tag-lockheed-martin","tag-middle-east","tag-military","tag-missile","tag-security","tag-thaad","tag-u-s","tag-uae
https://i0.wp.com/www.ir-ia.com/news/wp-content/uploads/2025/02/US-THAAD-Launcher.jpg?fit=690%2C370&ssl=1
["GET
