On July 29, a missile entered Polish territory during a period of Russian attacks against Ukraine. Polish officials said the object was probably Russian and that it fell roughly 50 kilometers from Lublin.

A Russian drone hit a block of flats in Romania, causing a fire and injuring two people, on May 29, 2026. The alliance has increasingly focused on air defense, surveillance and rapid-response capabilities as drones and missiles associated with the Ukraine conflict have repeatedly approached or entered the airspace of NATO members.

Drone Incidents Raise Wider Concerns

The latest developments are not limited to Poland and Romania. Several European countries have reported drones operating near sensitive sites, including military facilities, airports and industrial infrastructure.

Germany has also experienced a series of drone-related security incidents. At the beginning of August, an explosive-laden drone was found near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The discovery led the airport to increase security measures.

Later the same day, a DHL cargo aircraft was forced to abort its landing after the airport was closed because of the incident and subsequently collided with what was believed to be another drone.

Leipzig/Halle is an important European logistics hub and is used for the movement of military supplies destined for Ukraine, adding to concerns about the potential security implications of drone activity around critical infrastructure.

Russian Ministry of Defense documentary showcased production inside the Alabuga drone factory. European officials have linked some of these incidents to the wider security environment created by the war in Ukraine, while investigations into individual cases continue.

NATO Maintains Support for Ukraine

Despite the growing number of incidents involving NATO territory, the alliance said the developments would not weaken its support for Ukraine. “Allies underscored that they will not be deterred by these and other irresponsible acts by Russia from their enduring commitment to Ukraine, whose security contributes to ours,” NATO said.

The alliance reaffirmed its support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, territorial integrity and efforts to defend itself while pursuing peace.

NATO leaders have repeatedly identified Russia as a long-term security challenge for the Euro-Atlantic region. At their July summit in Ankara, alliance leaders described Moscow as a “long-term threat” to Euro-Atlantic security and stability.

The latest airspace incidents therefore come at a time when NATO is already increasing defense spending, strengthening its eastern flank and improving its ability to detect and respond to drones, missiles and other airborne threats.

Two Romanian Air Force F-16s fly above the Baltic Sea, modernized to NATO standards with advanced radar, avionics, and precision weapons for air policing and defense. While NATO members have avoided treating every airspace violation as a direct act of aggression against the alliance, repeated incursions are increasing pressure for stronger surveillance and air-defense capabilities.

NATO’s latest statement was intended to send a clear message that violations of allied airspace will not be ignored. At the same time, the alliance is seeking to strengthen its ability to respond without allowing individual incidents to escalate into a wider confrontation.

With the war in Ukraine continuing, the Baltic and Black Sea regions are likely to remain key areas of concern for NATO.
