The UK Royal Air Force has completed a four-month NATO air policing deployment in Romania, handing responsibility to the Spanish Air and Space Force after its Eurofighter Typhoon fighters conducted 49 Quick Reaction Alert scrambles and maintained high readiness for more than 1,500 hours.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British deployment was conducted by personnel from the 121st Expeditionary Air Wing and No. 3 (Fighter) Squadron, who operated Typhoon FGR4 aircraft from Borcea Air Base.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The mission supported NATO\u2019s Eastern Sentry activity and strengthened the Alliance\u2019s ability to respond rapidly to potential airspace violations along its southeastern flank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The formal handover took place on July 31 at Romania\u2019s 86th Air Base in Borcea, also known as Fetesti Air Base. The UK deployment was conducted as part of Operation Biloxi 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


49 Scrambles During Four-Month Deployment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The RAF Typhoon detachment conducted 49 Quick Reaction Alert scrambles during its deployment, which began on March 31.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Seven of the missions were live Alpha scrambles involving responses to unidentified aircraft and Russian one-way attack drone activity near NATO airspace. The remaining 42 were Tango training scrambles designed to maintain the readiness of NATO aircrews and ground personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The detachment-maintained aircraft and crews at very high readiness for more than 1,500 hours, allowing the force to respond rapidly when required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deployment also involved more than 180 flying hours and around 140 sorties, according to Allied Air Command. The British contingent worked alongside Romanian forces and personnel from eight NATO member states, combining operational air policing with multinational training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deployment demonstrated how NATO’s air policing missions are increasingly being integrated with broader air defense activities on the Alliance’s eastern flank.<\/p>\n\n\n

Training with NATO Allies<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Beyond Quick Reaction Alert duties, the RAF participated in several multinational exercises aimed at improving interoperability between NATO air forces and ground units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During Exercise Beastling Monolith, RAF Typhoons conducted air interdiction and close air support training with NATO Joint Terminal Attack Controllers from several Allied countries. The activity included Air-Land Integration training designed to improve coordination between aircraft and forces operating on the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The British detachment also participated in NATO\u2019s Neptune Strike activity, which involved coordinated operations with Allied forces across multiple domains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additional training included Exercise Beastling Redback, which focused on close air support in urban environments and included live-strafing training. The RAF detachment also took part in NATO Flexible Deterrence Options and integrated Joint Terminal Attack Controller training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These activities provided the British contingent with opportunities to operate alongside forces from France, Poland, Spain, Belgium, Italy and other NATO members, strengthening procedures that could be used during real-world operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wing Commander Daz Wicks-Randy, commanding officer of the 121 Expeditionary Air Wing, said: \u201cAs we hand over responsibility to the Spanish Air Force, we do so with a great sense of pride. Our people have delivered operational excellence throughout the deployment, maintaining NATO’s Air Policing mission while building enduring relationships with our Allied partners.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also said: \u201cTyphoon may be the visible symbol of our operation, but it is the people behind the aircraft who make delivering NATO Air Policing possible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Spain Takes Over Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spanish Air and Space Force will now assume responsibility for the mission from Mihail Kog\u0103lniceanu Air Base near Constan\u021ba.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Spain is deploying seven F\/A-18 Hornet fighters and about 200 personnel to Romania. An A400M Atlas aircraft will provide air-to-air refueling support, while additional Spanish capabilities are expected to contribute to the broader air defense mission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Spanish deployment ensures that NATO maintains an uninterrupted allied fighter presence in Romania as the British contingent withdraws. The RAF has been a regular contributor to NATO\u2019s enhanced Air Policing mission in Romania since 2014. Its latest deployment formed part of NATO\u2019s wider effort to strengthen its eastern flank following Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eastern Sentry was launched in September 2025 as an enhanced vigilance activity intended to reinforce NATO\u2019s posture along the eastern flank. Romania has faced repeated airspace concerns related to the war in neighboring Ukraine, including drone activity and debris associated with Russian attacks on Ukrainian infrastructure near the Romanian border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The handover also comes as NATO expands the mission beyond traditional air policing. Allied Air Command said the deployment marks a shift from NATO\u2019s Air Policing mission toward a broader Air Defense role within the Alliance\u2019s Integrated Air and Missile Defense framework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traditional air policing focuses largely on monitoring and protecting NATO airspace and maintaining fighter aircraft at short-notice readiness to intercept unidentified or unauthorized aircraft. The broader air defense approach provides NATO with greater flexibility to respond to a wider range of aerial threats, including manned and unmanned aircraft as well as cruise and ballistic missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change reflects NATO\u2019s effort to strengthen its ability to detect, track and respond to threats across the eastern flank while improving coordination between national and multinational air defense capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n

The British deployment therefore served not only as a fighter presence but also as an opportunity to develop the multinational procedures required for a more integrated air defense posture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Spain now taking over the mission, NATO will maintain its fighter presence in Romania while continuing to develop the wider Integrated Air and Missile Defense network across its eastern and southeastern flanks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
