Turkiye\u2019s defense firm ASELSAN has completed the integration of an advanced suite of Turkish-developed radar, combat and communications systems aboard Romania’s Contraamiral August Roman corvette, marking a major defense export success for Turkiye and strengthening defense cooperation within NATO.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vessel was built in Turkiye in 2024 as the Hisar-class offshore patrol vessel Akhisar for the Turkish Navy. Although delivered in December 2024, it was never commissioned before being sold to Romania under a government-to-government agreement signed in December 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2026, Romania renamed the ship Contraamiral August Roman and entered service with the Romanian Naval Forces after being fitted with ASELSAN’s integrated combat systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The delivery of the ship in 2025 marked the first time a warship built in Turkiye was exported to a NATO and European Union member state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current project expands Turkish defense corporation ASELSAN’s role in Romania’s naval modernization while increasing the company’s presence in the European defense market.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Contraamiral August Roman, bearing pennant number 261, has been equipped with an integrated package of surveillance, fire control, electro-optical, communications and navigation systems designed to improve the vessel’s operational effectiveness and combat capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n

Advanced Turkish Naval Systems<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Romanian Navy’s Contraamiral August Roman corvette has been fitted with the CENK 200 search and target detection radar, providing long-range surveillance and target tracking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Fire-control functions are handled by the AKREP 100-N radar, while the AHTAPOT 100 electro-optical reconnaissance, surveillance and targeting system enhances the ship’s ability to identify and engage threats in various operating conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For secure communications, ASELSAN supplied the ACROSAT 3210M X-band satellite communications system, enabling protected long-range connectivity during naval operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vessel also received the KARETTA 500 anti-jam system, designed to protect satellite navigation signals against electronic interference, an increasingly important capability in modern electronic warfare environments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, these systems significantly improve the Romanian ship’s situational awareness, precision targeting, secure communications, and navigation resilience, making the vessel better suited for operations in contested maritime environments.<\/p>\n\n\n

Strengthening Romania’s Naval Capabilities<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acquisition supports Romania’s efforts to modernize its naval fleet as regional security concerns continue to drive increased defense investment across the Black Sea and the wider NATO alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By integrating modern radar, targeting, communications and electronic protection systems, the corvette gains improved surveillance, command-and-control and combat capabilities, allowing it to operate more effectively during maritime security missions and allied naval operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The addition of anti-jamming technology also reflects the growing emphasis NATO members are placing on protecting navigation and communications systems against electronic warfare threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For ASELSAN, the program represents one of its most significant European naval export achievements to date. Having its systems installed aboard a frontline warship operated by a NATO and European Union member provides an important reference for future international naval modernization programs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The project also reinforces Turkish defense firm’s expanding portfolio of naval sensors, combat management technologies, communications and fire-control systems, areas where demand has increased as allied countries invest in upgrading their fleets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The successful delivery highlights the growing competitiveness of Turkiye’s defense industry in international markets and demonstrates the country’s ability to provide complete naval technology solutions for allied nations.<\/p>\n\n\n
