Iran said negotiations with Oman over a new shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz are in their final stages, while U.S. President Donald Trump announced that fresh negotiations with Tehran would begin on August 3, 2026, after he postponed planned military strikes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The parallel diplomatic initiatives come after months of conflict between Iran, Israel and the United States disrupted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway that normally carries about 20% of global oil consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although both sides have indicated a willingness to negotiate, officials in Tehran stressed that any agreement on a new maritime route would not automatically restore the strait to its pre-war status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said negotiations between Tehran and Muscat were nearing completion after briefing the Iranian cabinet on the latest developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Iranian officials, discussions are focused on establishing a new navigation corridor through the Strait of Hormuz that differs from the traditional northern and southern shipping routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said the proposed route would be acceptable to both Iran and Oman while respecting the sovereignty, security and national interests of both countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We are now going to reach an understanding on a route acceptable to both sides \u2013 neither the northern route nor the southern route, but one that respects the sovereign rights of both sides and safeguards our national interests and security,” Baqaei said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Oman had not publicly commented on the negotiations at the time of publication. Iranian officials emphasized that the maritime discussions are bilateral and do not involve other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baqaei said negotiations over the future management of the Strait of Hormuz had been under discussion for some time and were consistent with provisions contained in the memorandum of understanding reached with the United States earlier this year.<\/p>\n\n\n

He said the northern shipping corridor remained secure during the initial implementation of the agreement, but argued that subsequent U.S. military action prevented the restoration of maritime traffic to pre-war conditions. Iranian officials also rejected continued use of the southern route, saying it undermined national security and regional stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Baqaei stressed that agreement on a new navigation corridor “does not mean that the Strait of Hormuz will be opened or remain closed.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The Islamic Republic of Iran acts according to the country’s interests and considerations and will not change its decisions under the influence of threats or intimidation by others,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Trump Announces Fresh Negotiations<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Iranian announcement came hours after Trump said the United States would begin new negotiations with Tehran on Monday after deciding to postpone planned military strikes. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said negotiations would begin Monday afternoon, although he did not disclose the location or participants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier, Trump said he had agreed to suspend military action after requests from Iran and several Middle Eastern countries seeking additional time to finalize a diplomatic agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to Trump, Gulf leaders including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Qatar encouraged Washington to pursue diplomacy instead of launching another round of attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I said to the crown prince, ‘What would you rather do? Would you rather us do this or not?'” Trump told reporters. “They said we would much prefer a deal as opposed to an attack, because you don’t know where these attacks lead.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump previously said the proposed agreement would include the immediate reopening of the Strait of Hormuz and measures to eliminate what he described as Iran’s nuclear threat. He added that Israel supported renewed diplomatic efforts while maintaining pressure on Tehran to reach an agreement quickly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. president declined to set a deadline for negotiations but described prospects for a deal as encouraging.<\/p>\n\n\n

Iran Maintains Dual Approach<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran has responded cautiously to Trump’s latest comments, maintaining that diplomacy remains possible while insisting it is fully prepared for renewed military confrontation if negotiations fail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the memorandum of understanding reached with Washington should become the foundation of future relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“We must strive to make the enemy abide by what it signed. The security of our country, the region and our allies will be enhanced by this memorandum,” Pezeshkian said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian parliamentary officials also indicated that regional mediators continue efforts to revive the June memorandum of understanding and resolve disputes surrounding maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials said another Iranian delegation could travel to Muscat as negotiations continue. Meanwhile, Baqaei warned neighboring countries against providing military or logistical support for any future U.S. military action against Iran, saying countries facilitating such operations would be viewed as participants in aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that the United Kingdom, Bulgaria and Ukraine had informed Tehran they would not participate in any potential future U.S. attacks on Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Shipping Risks Remain<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite renewed diplomatic activity, security concerns continue across the Gulf. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) reported that a tanker experienced an explosion nearby while sailing approximately 20 nautical miles northeast of Khasab, Oman, near the entrance to the Strait of Hormuz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The vessel and crew were reported safe, while authorities launched an investigation. UKMTO advised commercial vessels to exercise caution when transiting the area.<\/p>\n\n\n

Shipping activity through the strait remains well below normal levels following months of conflict, although vessel movements have periodically increased following signs of diplomatic progress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Strait of Hormuz links the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea and serves as one of the world’s most important energy chokepoints. Before the conflict, roughly one-fifth of global oil supplies and significant volumes of liquefied natural gas passed through the narrow waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The disruption has contributed to higher energy prices and increased concerns over global supply chains and inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, financial markets responded positively to the latest diplomatic developments. Brent crude oil fell by more than 4% in early Asian trading to around $83 per barrel after Trump’s announcement that planned U.S. strikes had been suspended in favor of negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Conflict Continues to Shape Diplomacy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The current negotiations follow months of military escalation that began after U.S. and Israeli strikes against Iran in late February. A ceasefire reached in June collapsed weeks later amid disagreements over maritime access through the Strait of Hormuz, leading to renewed fighting in July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since then, the conflict has expanded beyond the Gulf, affecting maritime security in the Red Sea and prompting repeated warnings from shipping authorities about risks to commercial navigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Tehran and Washington now appear willing to resume talks, major differences remain over the future management of the Strait of Hormuz, Iran’s nuclear program and broader regional security arrangements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest negotiations with Oman represent one of the most significant diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions since fighting resumed, although both Iranian and U.S. officials have acknowledged that substantial issues remain unresolved.<\/p>\n\n\n
