The conflict between the United States and Iran intensified sharply after an Iranian missile and drone attack on a military facility in Jordan on July 17, 2026, killed two U.S. service members and left another injured.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The recent attacks prompted a new wave of American strikes against Iranian military targets, marking one of the deadliest incidents for U.S. forces since the war began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attack by Iran targeted U.S. forces stationed in Jordan, according to U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM). Four additional U.S. troops were evacuated to hospitals in Jordan for treatment before later returning to duty. The identities of the two service members killed have not yet been released pending notification of their families.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The deaths increase the number of American military personnel killed since the conflict erupted. Around 16 American troops have been confirmed killed during the war so far, while more than 430 others have been wounded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Washington Responds Strikes<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pentagon launched another round of strikes against Iranian military infrastructure following the attack, saying the operations were aimed at weakening Iran’s ability to threaten regional security and commercial shipping while holding those responsible for the Jordan attack accountable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. military said its latest operations targeted military logistics infrastructure and facilities linked to Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), describing the campaign as part of efforts to degrade Tehran’s military capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n

The strikes marked the eighth consecutive day of U.S. attacks on Iranian targets as the conflict continues to expand across the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth paid tribute to the fallen troops, saying their deaths would strengthen the U.S. resolve to continue military operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

President Donald Trump had not appeared publicly following the attack but described the deaths as “a very sad thing” during a telephone interview, saying the service members had died in service to their country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Iran Broadens Regional Attacks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran claimed responsibility for a series of retaliatory operations targeting U.S. military facilities and regional allies. The IRGC said it had delivered what it described as “heavy blows” against U.S. bases in Jordan, Kuwait, and Oman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian authorities also reported shooting down several American drones, including an MQ-9 Reaper and another reconnaissance drone operating over southern Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian state media additionally claimed the country’s air defense systems intercepted an American cruise missile in western Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n

The latest exchanges came as Tehran continued to warn commercial shipping against transiting the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important maritime energy corridors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran also said two vessels ignored its warnings and subsequently became involved in what it described as an “accident,” reiterating threats against ships linked to the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Jordan Condemns Attack<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jordan strongly condemned the strikes on its territory, summoning Iran’s charg\u00e9 d’affaires in Amman to deliver what officials described as a strongly worded protest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jordan’s Foreign Ministry called the Iranian attacks an unacceptable violation of the country’s sovereignty and demanded an immediate halt to military operations targeting Jordanian territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. Embassy in Jordan also issued a security advisory urging American citizens to avoid Aqaba’s airport and seaport because of what it described as a “specific and credible threat.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jordanian military officials later said air defense systems intercepted three Iranian missiles, while a fourth projectile landed in a remote area without causing casualties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The attacks also prompted Israel to launch interceptor missiles after debris from Iranian projectiles posed a potential threat to southern Israel. Israeli authorities reported that interceptor fragments fell near Eilat but caused no injuries or significant damage.<\/p>\n\n\n

Civilian Infrastructure Increasingly Affected<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conflict has increasingly spread beyond military installations, with both sides accusing each other of striking civilian infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian officials said U.S. strikes hit an under-construction nuclear power plant in Darkhoveyn as well as facilities on Qeshm Island. Tehran also accused Washington of attacking bridges and civilian transportation infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meanwhile, Kuwait reported that an electricity generation and water desalination facility was struck for a second time in two days, causing another fire. Gulf Cooperation Council member states condemned the attacks on civilian infrastructure and expressed solidarity with Bahrain and Jordan following Iranian strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The United States has maintained that its operations target only military objectives and infrastructure supporting Iranian military operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Under international humanitarian law, attacks on civilian infrastructure are prohibited unless such facilities are being used for military purposes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Growing Casualties on Both Sides<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The fighting has continued to produce mounting casualties. Iran’s Health Ministry said at least 50 people had been killed and more than 500 wounded in recent U.S. strikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iranian authorities have not released a comprehensive assessment of military or infrastructure losses since the conflict began.<\/p>\n\n\n

For the United States, the deaths in Jordan represent the highest-profile loss of American personnel since early July, when the commanding officer of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron 5, Cmdr. Gabriel Edwards was killed after an MH-60S Seahawk helicopter went down in the Arabian Sea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Strait of Hormuz Remains Flashpoint<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest escalation comes amid an increasingly dangerous confrontation over the Strait of Hormuz, through which roughly one-fifth of globally traded oil and natural gas normally passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Washington says its continuing military campaign is intended to protect freedom of navigation and reduce Iran’s ability to threaten commercial shipping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran, however, has declared the strategic waterway closed and continues to threaten vessels it considers supportive of the United States and its allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The renewed fighting follows the collapse of a preliminary ceasefire reached in June. President Trump declared the agreement effectively over earlier this month, while Iran accused Washington of repeatedly violating its commitments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iran’s Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei said recent U.S. actions demonstrated that Washington could not be trusted to honor agreements, arguing that repeated violations had undermined any remaining confidence in diplomatic efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite the escalating military exchanges, regional governments continue urging restraint, warning that further attacks risk drawing more countries into a broader regional conflict and increasing instability across the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n
