Australia already maintains treaty-based defense relationships with the United States, New Zealand, and Papua New Guinea, and Fiji now joins that group under the new arrangement.

Speaking after the signing ceremony, Prime Minister Rabuka said the agreements represent an important step in strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.

Part of Australia’s Wider Pacific Strategy

The agreement forms part of Australia’s broader effort to deepen engagement with Pacific island countries following China’s expanding diplomatic and security presence in the region.

Regional security concerns increased in 2022 when China signed a security agreement with the Solomon Islands, prompting speculation that Beijing could eventually establish a permanent military presence in the South Pacific.

Since then, Australia has accelerated diplomatic and security cooperation with several Pacific nations, including Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and Tuvalu.

Last month, Australia and Vanuatu also signed a security agreement that prevents the establishment of any foreign military base in Vanuatu, further reflecting Canberra’s efforts to strengthen regional security partnerships.

Fiji Shifts Back Toward Traditional Partners

Fiji’s foreign policy has shifted since Prime Minister Rabuka returned to office in 2022. Under former Prime Minister Frank Bainimarama, who came to power following a 2006 coup, Fiji significantly expanded its relationship with China after facing international sanctions that affected trade and diplomatic relations. During that period, Beijing became an important economic partner, investing in infrastructure and development projects.

Australia and Fiji have signed a major new defence alliance. Kiribati, the Solomon Islands, and Nauru have all ended formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan in recent years in favor of recognizing Beijing.

China has defended its growing presence in the region as supporting economic development and infrastructure needs.
