Moscow argues that the alliance’s military infrastructure has steadily moved closer to Russian territory over the past several decades.

Commenting on the exercise on Monday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was closely monitoring developments and taking appropriate measures to safeguard its national security.

“Of course, this process is being closely monitored by our defense ministry … Russia is taking the necessary measures to ensure its security against the backdrop of these developments,” Peskov told reporters.

He added that NATO’s military infrastructure has been approaching Russia’s borders for many years, a trend Moscow views as a significant security concern.

Russia has frequently described NATO’s activities near its western borders as unprecedented and has accused the alliance of contributing to militarization across Europe. NATO, however, maintains that its deployments and exercises are defensive in nature and aimed at deterring potential aggression.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has previously stated that Moscow remains open to dialogue with NATO based on equality while urging Western countries to reduce military tensions and abandon what it describes as the militarization of the European continent.

NATO AWACS operating out of Forward Operating Base Aktion, Greece, during exercise Ramstein Flag 24.
