U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping held extensive high-level talks in Beijing on May 14, 2026, during Trump\u2019s state visit to China, as both countries sought to stabilize relations while addressing major global and regional issues, including trade, Taiwan, Iran, and technology cooperation.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The visit, taking place from May 13 to May 15, marks the first trip by a sitting U.S. president to China in nearly a decade and comes at a time of continued competition and tension between the world\u2019s two largest economies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meetings on May 14 included a formal welcome ceremony at the Great Hall of the People, bilateral talks between the two leaders and their senior delegations, discussions involving U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and a large state banquet hosted by Xi in the evening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both sides publicly emphasized cooperation and stability throughout the day, although major differences remained, especially over Taiwan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Welcome Ceremony in Beijing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump arrived at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing in the morning and was welcomed by Xi with a full state ceremony that included national anthems, a military honor guard, a 21-gun salute, and children waving Chinese and U.S. flags.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The U.S. delegation included Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.<\/p>\n\n\n

Several major American business leaders also attended parts of the visit, including Elon Musk of Tesla, Tim Cook of Apple, and Jensen Huang of Nvidia. China\u2019s delegation included Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Premier Li Qiang, Vice Premier He Lifeng, and senior Communist Party official Cai Qi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The talks between Trump and Xi lasted around two hours, longer than originally planned, reflecting the broad agenda and importance of the discussions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In his opening remarks, Xi said the meeting was taking place during a period of major global change and uncertainty. He stressed the need for China and the U.S. to avoid confrontation and build a more stable relationship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Xi said China and the U.S. should \u201cbe partners not rivals\u201d and called for a \u201cconstructive China-U.S. relationship of strategic stability.\u201d He also delivered a strong warning on Taiwan, describing it as the most important issue in bilateral relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe Taiwan question is the most important issue in China-U.S. relations,\u201d Xi said. \u201cIf it is handled properly, the bilateral relationship will enjoy overall stability. Otherwise, the two countries will have clashes and even conflicts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
