These systems can travel at speeds greater than five times the speed of sound while maneuvering during flight, making them difficult for traditional missile defense systems to detect and intercept.

The United States, China, and Russia have all invested heavily in hypersonic weapons development in recent years, fueling a growing global arms race centered on advanced strike capabilities.

Under the new contract, Leidos will continue work on the Common Hypersonic Glide Body program, which forms the core structure of the long-range hypersonic missile system known as Dark Eagle.

The missile system was successfully tested by the U.S. Army and United States Navy earlier this year, representing an important milestone for the Pentagon’s hypersonic weapons program.

The U.S. Army’s Rapid Capabilities and Critical Technologies Office, in collaboration with the U.S. Navy Strategic Systems Programs, completed a conventional hypersonic missile test from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station, Florida, on December 12, 2024. Managing thermal stress is considered one of the biggest technological challenges in hypersonic weapons development.

By integrating the Thermal Protection Shield and CHGB programs, the company said it aims to reduce manufacturing delays and ensure a more reliable supply of critical components needed for operational deployment.

Leidos added that the unified approach supports broader U.S. military acquisition reform initiatives designed to speed up weapons development and production timelines.

The company has served as the prime contractor for the Thermal Protection Shield program since 2021 and for the Common Hypersonic Glide Body program since 2019.

Military Modernization

Leidos said the contract will also allow the company to apply its experience in guidance systems, sensor technologies, and precision munitions integration to help strengthen U.S. hypersonic capabilities.

Cindy Gruensfelder, president of Leidos Defense, described the agreement as a major milestone for the company and the U.S. military.

“This contract is a major step forward in delivering hypersonic capabilities to the warfighter at speed,” Gruensfelder said. “Our team is committed to supporting the Army and Navy in producing this critical operational capability,” she added.

Artist Rendering of Hypersonic weapon systems.
