Russian President Vladimir Putin met Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on April 27, 2026, in St. Petersburg as diplomatic efforts between Washington and Tehran remain stalled and regional tensions continue to rise.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The talks took place during Araghchi\u2019s broader regional tour, which has included Pakistan and Oman, and comes amid ongoing conflict dynamics following the U.S.-Israeli joint military attack on February 28, which has led to significant casualties and escalated tensions across the Middle East.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting was attended by senior Russian officials, including Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, presidential aide Yuri Ushakov, and Adm. Igor Kostyukov, head of Russian military intelligence. On the Iranian side, Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi and Ambassador Kazem Jalali also participated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov described the meeting as highly significant, stating that \u201cthe importance of this conversation is difficult to overestimate in terms of the evolving situation around Iran and in the Middle East.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Putin\u2019s Message<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the meeting, Putin reaffirmed Russia\u2019s strategic partnership with Iran and expressed support for what he described as the Iranian people\u2019s struggle for sovereignty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He stated that Russia \u201cwill do everything\u201d to help ensure stability in the Middle East and emphasized the need for peace in the region. \u201cThe people of Iran are bravely and heroically fighting for their sovereignty,\u201d Putin said, according to Russian state media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added that Russia hopes Iran will navigate its current difficulties successfully, saying, \u201cWe sincerely hope that, drawing on this courage and desire for independence, the Iranian people will, under the leadership of a new leader, navigate this difficult period of trials and peace will come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n

Putin also noted that he had received a message from Iran\u2019s Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, underscoring ongoing high-level communication between the two countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Iran\u2019s Response<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Araghchi expressed gratitude for Russia\u2019s political support and emphasized that Tehran considers its relationship with Moscow a long-term strategic partnership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said Iran has demonstrated resilience in the face of external pressure, stating, \u201cThe entire world witnessed Iran\u2019s true power in confronting the United States, which demonstrated that the Islamic Republic of Iran is a stable, resilient, and powerful system.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He added, \u201cThe Iranian people, through their courage, were able to resist American aggression and will continue to do so.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Araghchi further highlighted the importance of Iran\u2019s partnerships, saying, \u201cIn the recent war, it became clear that Iran has great friends and allies such as Russia. We are grateful for your support and positions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking separately to Russian media outlet Vesti, Araghchi also indicated that Washington has proposed renewed talks with Tehran, and that Iran is currently considering the option.
