Hezbollah claimed at least 24 attacks on northern Israel and Israeli troops in southern Lebanon on Tuesday alone. Air raid sirens sounded continuously in Israeli border communities due to incoming rockets and drones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The conflict has had a devastating impact on Lebanon. According to health authorities, more than 2,100 people have been killed, including hundreds of women and children. Over 1 million people have been forced from their homes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the deadliest moments came last week when Israel launched around 100 airstrikes across Lebanon within 10 minutes, including strikes in central Beirut, killing more than 350 people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israeli military operations are ongoing, particularly in southern Lebanon, where clashes remain intense in areas such as Bint Jbeil. Israeli forces are attempting to establish control in key areas near the border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Hezbollah Rejects Talks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Hezbollah strongly opposes the negotiations and was not represented in Washington. The group has dismissed the talks as ineffective and has said it will not accept any outcome reached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior Hezbollah official Wafiq Safa said the group would not abide by any agreements made during the discussions. While the Lebanese government has criticized Hezbollah\u2019s role in triggering the conflict, the group still holds political power and military capability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Different Goals on the Table<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two sides are entering the talks with very different priorities. Lebanon is pushing for an immediate ceasefire and sees the meeting as a first step toward ending the war. Instead, it is focused on dismantling Hezbollah\u2019s military capabilities. Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said, \u201cThe problem is Hezbollah,\u201d adding that the group is effectively keeping Lebanon under Iranian influence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israeli officials are reportedly considering plans to establish a security zone in southern Lebanon, potentially extending up to the Litani River. The proposal could involve phased control, with Israeli forces initially maintaining a presence before gradually transferring authority to the Lebanese army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel has also said displaced citizens will not be allowed to return to southern areas until it is fully demilitarized and security is guaranteed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Background and Timing<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The talks are the first direct negotiations between Lebanon and Israel since 1993. The main focus of the talks is likely to be establishing a framework for future negotiations rather than reaching a quick agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The situation on the ground may also shape the direction of the talks. Military developments, particularly in southern Lebanon, could influence each side\u2019s negotiating position in the coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For now, diplomacy and conflict are unfolding in parallel, with no clear sign of a near-term breakthrough.
