The U.S. military said the operation would target ships traveling to or from Iranian ports, rather than all traffic in the waterway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump had earlier suggested a broader effort involving multiple countries. &#8220;The Blockade will begin shortly. Other Countries will be involved with this Blockade,&#8221; he said in a post on Truth Social on Sunday. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, key NATO members, including Britain and France, quickly ruled out direct participation. European leaders said they would not be drawn into the conflict and would not support enforcement of the blockade. Tehran is also reported to be considering long-term control measures, including possible transit fees for ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Britain made its position clear. &#8220;We&#8217;re not supporting the blockade,&#8221; British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said during an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;My decision has been very clear that whatever the pressure, and there&#8217;s been some considerable pressure, we&#8217;re not getting dragged into the war,&#8221; he said. He added that the focus was on reopening the strait and stabilizing energy markets as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Pressure on NATO Increases<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The disagreement adds to existing friction between Trump and NATO allies. The U.S. president has previously threatened to withdraw from the alliance and is considering reducing American troop levels in Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several countries have already refused to allow U.S. military aircraft to use their airspace for operations linked to the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has urged European governments to provide concrete commitments to help secure the Strait of Hormuz in the near future. He said the alliance could still play a role, but only if all 32 member states agree on a formal mission. (Image Credit: Martijn Beekman\/NATO)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>European countries have indicated they are open to contributing to maritime security efforts, but only after a ceasefire is firmly in place and there are guarantees that their vessels will not be targeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Plans for Post-Conflict Mission<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France and Britain are leading efforts to build a multinational initiative focused on protecting shipping after the war ends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>French President Emmanuel Macron said a conference would be organized with international partners to develop a coordinated approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;This strictly defensive mission, distinct from the belligerents, will be deployed as soon as the situation allows,&#8221; Macron said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The proposed mission would focus on escorting commercial vessels, coordinating naval deployments, and establishing clear rules for safe passage through the strait. Starmer confirmed that discussions are already underway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Let me be very clear, this is about safeguarding shipping and supporting freedom of navigation once the conflict ends. UK mine-sweeping assets and anti-drone capabilities remain deployed, but they will not be used to enforce restrictions on Iranian ports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starmer said operational details would not be discussed publicly, but emphasized that any involvement would be defensive and focused on securing trade routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also stressed that reopening the strait is critical for global energy stability. Oil markets have already reacted to the escalation. Brent crude rose above $100 per barrel following the blockade announcement, compared to around $71 before the conflict began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Diplomatic Efforts Continue<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Diplomatic efforts to resolve the crisis are ongoing, though progress has been limited. Recent talks between the United States and Iran in Islamabad failed to produce a breakthrough, leading directly to the U.S. decision to proceed with the blockade. Turkey also weighed in on the situation, calling for a diplomatic solution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan said the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened through negotiations rather than military measures. He added that creating an international force to control the waterway would be complex.
