Switzerland has announced that it will not issue new licenses for companies to export weapons and military equipment to the United States due to the ongoing conflict involving Iran.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision was made on March 20, 2026, based on the country\u2019s long-standing policy of neutrality during international conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a statement, the government made its position clear, saying: \u201cThe export of war materiel to countries involved in the international armed conflict with Iran cannot be authorized for the duration of the conflict.\u201d It added that \u201cexports of war materiel to the USA cannot currently be authorized.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The move comes as the United States continues joint military operations with Israel targeting Iran. Switzerland said the current situation falls under its neutrality laws, which restrict arms exports to countries actively involved in war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Swiss government confirmed that since Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran began on February 28, no new export licenses for war materiel to the United States have been approved. This effectively pauses any new arms-related trade linked to the conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Officials also clarified that previously issued licenses for exports to the United States are still valid. However, these existing licenses have been reviewed and \u201chave been determined to be of no relevance to the war at present and can therefore continue to be used.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This means that while past agreements remain technically active, Switzerland is taking steps to ensure that its exports are not contributing to ongoing military operations.<\/p>\n\n\n

Long-Standing Neutrality Policy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switzerland emphasized that its actions are rooted in its traditional neutrality, which has shaped its foreign and defense policies for decades. The country has consistently avoided direct involvement in international conflicts and has strict rules governing arms exports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The government noted that it has not granted definitive licenses for the export of war materiel to Israel for several years. Similarly, it said that neither Israel nor Iran has received Swiss weapons export approvals in recent years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Switzerland pointed to past actions to show that similar measures have been taken before. Following the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, the country imposed bans on flights over its airspace and halted weapons exports to countries involved in that war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those restrictions were later lifted once the situation changed, indicating that the current measures could also be temporary depending on how the conflict develops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This historical example reinforces the idea that Switzerland\u2019s current policy is consistent with its previous responses to major international conflicts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
