Switzerland said the current situation falls under its neutrality laws, which restrict arms exports to countries actively involved in war.

The Swiss government confirmed that since Israeli and U.S. strikes on Iran began on February 28, no new export licenses for war materiel to the United States have been approved. This effectively pauses any new arms-related trade linked to the conflict.

Officials also clarified that previously issued licenses for exports to the United States are still valid. However, these existing licenses have been reviewed and “have been determined to be of no relevance to the war at present and can therefore continue to be used.”

This means that while past agreements remain technically active, Switzerland is taking steps to ensure that its exports are not contributing to ongoing military operations.

Switzerland’s national flag flies at the Swiss Federal Palace (Bundeshaus), the seat of the parliament and the government, in Bern, Switzerland, on March 18, 2021. The country has consistently avoided direct involvement in international conflicts and has strict rules governing arms exports.

The government noted that it has not granted definitive licenses for the export of war materiel to Israel for several years. Similarly, it said that neither Israel nor Iran has received Swiss weapons export approvals in recent years.

By extending restrictions to the United States in the current situation, Switzerland is applying the same principles to all countries involved in the conflict.

The announcement follows earlier decisions by Switzerland regarding the use of its airspace. Last weekend, the government rejected two U.S. requests for flyovers with Iran-related military operations, while allowing three others.

Officials said these decisions were also made under neutrality law, suggesting that each request is reviewed individually based on its purpose and potential connection to the conflict.

This selective approach highlights Switzerland’s attempt to balance its legal obligations with practical considerations, while maintaining its neutral stance.

U.S. sailors prepare to stage ordnance on the flight deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln in support of Operation Epic Fury in the U.S. Central Command area of responsibility, on February 28, 2026. Following the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003, the country imposed bans on flights over its airspace and halted weapons exports to countries involved in that war.

Those restrictions were later lifted once the situation changed, indicating that the current measures could also be temporary depending on how the conflict develops.

This historical example reinforces the idea that Switzerland’s current policy is consistent with its previous responses to major international conflicts.

Ongoing Monitoring of the Situation

The Swiss government said that a group of experts will continue to monitor developments related to arms exports and the broader conflict. This group will regularly assess whether additional steps are needed under neutrality law.

Officials stressed that the situation remains under review, and policies could be adjusted if circumstances change. For now, the focus is on ensuring that Switzerland does not contribute, directly or indirectly, to the conflict.

The decision reflects a cautious and measured approach, aiming to uphold Switzerland’s neutrality while responding to a rapidly evolving geopolitical situation.

Swiss Armed Forces organizing various types of ammunition.
