India is set to approve procurement of five Russian S-400 air defense systems<\/strong><\/p>\n

NEW DELHI (India) – Indian Defence Ministry has approved the purchase of five\u00a0Russian S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems.<\/p>\n

The forthcoming deal, estimated to\u00a0be worth around $6 billion (400 billion rupees), also covers the purchase of\u00a0about 6,000 missiles, a mobile launcher and a radar station, according to Indian news media.<\/p>\n

Indian Defense Acquisition Council (DAC) has assented to the procurement of five Russian S-400 air defense systems during a meeting under the chairmanship of Defense Minister Manohar Parrikar, the Indian media reported.<\/p>\n

The procurement of\u00a0five S-400 systems, as\u00a0the Hindustan Times<\/a><\/span> reports, will be discussed during\u00a0the December 23-24 visit of\u00a0Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to\u00a0Russia, with\u00a0a joint statement on\u00a0the issue to\u00a0be made after\u00a0the planned meeting between\u00a0Modi and Russian President Vladimir Putin.<\/p>\n

India will be the second buyer of the missile system after China if the deal goes through.\u00a0Industry estimates have suggested that the missile system will cost about Rs 40,000 crore.<\/p>\n

Indian Defense Ministry sources said that the step has been taken to enhance the national air defence capacity.<\/p>\n

India remains the largest importer of\u00a0Russian weapons. Russian-and Soviet-made arms account for\u00a0about 70 percent of\u00a0the Indian defense forces’ total arsenal, according to\u00a0the Center for\u00a0Analyses of\u00a0World Arms Trade.\u00a0Russian military deliveries to\u00a0India amounted to $4.7 billion in\u00a02014 according to\u00a0Federal Service for\u00a0Military-Technical Cooperation.<\/p>\n

The S-400 is a medium and long-range air defense system, capable of neutralizing modern and advanced air and space attacks at\u00a0the distance up\u00a0to 400 km.The S400 Triumf is designed to knock down flying targets including those equipped with stealth technologies.<\/p>\n
