Ministers stressed that support for Ukraine remains their top priority even as NATO expands its focus to the Arctic. The ministers also debated a more European-led future for the Alliance.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The row over Greenland last month had sparked fears that the 70-year-old military alliance could fracture after U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to forcefully take control of the Danish territory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But ministers arriving in Brussels signaled that allies are now returning to business as usual while balancing new security concerns in the High North with ongoing support for Kyiv.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the center of the discussions was the launch of \u201cArctic Sentry,\u201d a new NATO enhanced vigilance activity aimed at strengthening the alliance\u2019s presence and coordination across the Arctic region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The initiative, announced by NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte a day earlier, will bring together operations and exercises from the 32 allies under a unified operational strategy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This includes Denmark\u2019s Arctic Endurance series of exercises and Norway\u2019s large-scale Cold Response drills, with troops already arriving in the region. The move reflects growing concern over Russian and Chinese activity in the Arctic, as well as long-standing U.S. calls for stronger NATO attention to the High North. Despite the new focus, ministers repeatedly emphasized that Ukraine remains NATO\u2019s main priority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\u275dWe are working together as Allies to deliver effective deterrence and defence.\u275e<br><br>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SecGenNATO?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SecGenNATO<\/a> | <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/DefMin?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#DefMin<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6qHNtNuEz8\">pic.twitter.com\/6qHNtNuEz8<\/a><\/p>&mdash; NATO (@NATO) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NATO\/status\/2021986030111633905?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">February 12, 2026<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p><br><br><strong>Support for Ukraine Remains Central<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Porgerour Katrin Gunnarsdottir, Iceland\u2019s foreign minister, warned against any drift in attention away from the war. \u201cWe cannot allow ourselves to have lesser focus on the eastern flank,\u201d she told reporters, describing Ukraine as fighting \u201cfor Europe\u2019s freedom and sovereignty.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finland\u2019s defense minister Antti Hakkanen echoed that message, urging allies to maintain pressure on Moscow. &#8220;Now is the crucial time to keep on supporting Ukraine even more and show (Russian President Vladimir) Putin that the West is not dropping back,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Estonian Defense Minister Hanno Pevkur also welcomed the Arctic mission but insisted it \u201cdoesn\u2019t take away the focus from Ukraine, from the eastern flank.\u201d He called for increased pressure on Russia across multiple fronts, saying that &#8220;it\u2019s not only the battlefield where Russia needs to be pressured. It\u2019s also the economy, it\u2019s also society&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said NATO must \u201corient our radar systems in all directions\u201d but stressed that the eastern flank would remain the alliance\u2019s main focus. He described Russia\u2019s strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure as \u201cterrorism against the civilian population\u201d and called for an urgent increase in support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several new support packages were discussed. Germany signaled it would continue using the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List (PURL) mechanism, under which European allies purchase U.S.-made weapons for Kyiv. (Image Credit: Vasco Cotovio\/CNN)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>The United Kingdom said it would provide an additional $630 million in support to Ukraine, including funds for U.S. air defense interceptors and 1,000 British-made missiles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Ukraine has begun allowing some domestic arms manufacturers to export weapons despite the ongoing war, a move officials say will help attract investment and expand production capacity. Kyiv\u2019s defense industry now includes more than 1,000 companies and has an annual production capacity exceeding $55 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Arctic Mission and Alliance Unity<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Arctic Sentry initiative comes amid renewed strategic competition in the High North and recent political tensions within NATO. (Image Credit: NATO)<\/sup><\/em><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><br><strong>Debate over NATO\u2019s Future<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A major theme of the meeting was the future structure of NATO and the balance of responsibilities between the United States and European allies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Elbridge Colby, the U.S. Under Secretary of War, who attended in place of Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, outlined Washington\u2019s vision for a more European-led alliance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;What is needed is a &#8216;NATO 3.0&#8217;,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This NATO 3.0 requires much greater efforts by our allies to step up and assume primary responsibility for the conventional defense of Europe.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He argued that Europe should field most of the forces needed to deter and defeat conventional aggression on the continent, while the United States focuses more on other strategic theatres, particularly the Indo-Pacific and the Western Hemisphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Colby said the shift was not an abandonment of NATO but a return to its original principles of burden-sharing and collective defense.
