They were brought to New York and are set to face\u00a0drug and weapons charges\u00a0in Manhattan federal court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President Donald Trump confirmed the operation, saying U.S. forces struck multiple targets, neutralized Venezuelan military capabilities, and seized the country\u2019s leader in what he described as a decisive action against narcotics trafficking and authoritarian rule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe will run the country until such time as we can do a safe, proper and judicious transition,\u201d Trump said during a press conference at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida. \u201cWe can&#8217;t take a chance that someone else takes over Venezuela who doesn&#8217;t have the interests of Venezuelans in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The operation immediately triggered international condemnation, sharp debate in the U.S. Congress, celebrations among parts of the Venezuelan diaspora, and deep concern across Latin America and Europe over the precedent set by the use of force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Inside US \u2018Operation Absolute Resolve\u2019 to Capture Maduro<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to U.S. officials, \u2018Operation Absolute Resolve\u2019, which involved more than 150 aircraft, began late Friday night and concluded in the early hours of Saturday, involving coordinated strikes by air, land, and sea forces. Trump said Maduro was seized from a \u201chighly guarded\u201d presidential compound that was \u201clike a fortress.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt had what they call a safety space, where it\u2019s solid steel all around,\u201d Trump said. \u201cHe was trying to get into it, but he got bum-rushed right so fast that he didn\u2019t get into that. Central to the effort were major U.S. Navy warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Gerald R. Air assets reportedly included over 150 aircraft from sea and land bases, such as Marine Corps F-35B and AV-8B jets, F\/A-18 Super Hornets, MQ-9 Reaper drones, AC-130 gunships, and a variety of helicopters and support planes from the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment that ferried special operators and provided assault and extraction capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Helicopters played a direct role in the nighttime capture and evacuation of Maduro, who was flown to the USS Iwo Jima after the raid. No U.S. service members were killed, according to the president, though he said several were injured. \u201cA couple of guys were hit, but they came back, and they\u2019re supposed to be in pretty good shape,\u201d he said. Trump said no U.S. aircraft were lost, although one helicopter was \u201chit pretty hard.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Maduro in US custody<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After his capture, Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were flown by helicopter to a U.S. warship, the USS Iwo Jima. Trump later shared a photo showing Maduro aboard the vessel. The U.S. government had placed a $50 million reward on information leading to Maduro\u2019s arrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Trump Administration will \u2018Temporarily Run\u2019 Venezuela<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In remarks at his Mar-a-Lago residence, Trump said the United States would temporarily assume responsibility for governing Venezuela. \u201cWe\u2019re going to run the country until we can do a safe, proper, and judicious transition,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t want to be involved with having somebody else get in, and we have the same situation that we had for the last long period of years,\u201d Trump added. \u201cWe want peace, liberty, and justice for the great people of Venezuela.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump said Venezuelan military forces were \u201ccompletely overwhelmed and very quickly incapacitated,\u201d adding that \u201call Venezuelan military capacities were rendered powerless.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth praised the operation and issued a warning to U.S. adversaries. \u201cOur adversaries remain on notice.
