The defense secretary also promised an end to anonymous complaints, beard exemptions, and grooming standard relaxations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Trump\u2019s speech<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump, who took the stage after Hegseth, praised the changes as part of his broader effort to restore military discipline and strength. He repeated his criticism of Democratic-led cities, describing them as \u201cvery unsafe places\u201d and promising to \u201cstraighten them out one by one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Calling civil disturbances an \u201cenemy from within,\u201d Trump said: \u201cIt\u2019s a war from within. Controlling the physical territory of our borders is essential for national security. We can\u2019t let these people in.\u201d He added: \u201cSan Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, they\u2019re very unsafe places and we\u2019re gonna straighten them out one by one.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAmerica is under invasion from within. We&#8217;re under invasion from within. No different than a foreign enemy, but more difficult in many ways because they don&#8217;t wear uniforms. He also backed Hegseth\u2019s reforms, stressing that fitness and ability, not \u201cpolitical correctness,\u201d would guide military standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s to protect our country. We will not be politically correct when it comes to defending American freedom,\u201d Trump said. The president went further by announcing the rebranding of the Pentagon as the \u201cDepartment of War,\u201d calling it a \u201chistoric re-assertion of our purpose, our identity and our pride.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Silent audience<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Throughout the speeches, the assembled generals and admirals listened largely in silence, many taking notes. The only sound came when hundreds of boots snapped to attention as Trump entered and left the stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joking about the quiet atmosphere, Trump said: \u201cI\u2019ve never walked into a room so silent before.\u201d He ended by declaring, \u201cTogether, we\u2019re reawakening the warrior spirit. And this is a spirit that won and built this nation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Political reaction<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remarks drew sharp criticism from political opponents.
