{"id":2829,"date":"2015-07-19T16:54:34","date_gmt":"2015-07-19T16:54:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=2829"},"modified":"2015-07-19T16:55:06","modified_gmt":"2015-07-19T16:55:06","slug":"massive-bombing-on-eid-kills-more-than-120-in-iraq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/massive-bombing-on-eid-kills-more-than-120-in-iraq\/","title":{"rendered":"Massive bombing on Eid kills more than 120 in Iraq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Iraq&#8217;s deadliest attacks in a decade turn joyful Eid celebrations into a scene of carnage and horror<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">BAGHDAD (Iraq) \u2014 The death toll from a bombing at a crowded marketplace in eastern Iraq climbed to as many as 130 on Saturday, Iraqi officials said, marking the Islamic State\u2019s worst single bombing attack on a civilian target in the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The explosion, one of the deadliest recent attacks in Iraq, occurred late Friday in the Al-Khales area of Khan Bani Saad, a town in Diyala province about 35 miles north of Baghdad. The timing of the detonation caught shoppers out in force for the Eid al-Fitr celebration, which marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Police said a small truck detonated in a crowded marketplace in the town of Khan Beni Saad Friday night and quickly turned celebrations into a scene of horror, with body parts scattered across the market. At least 170 people were injured.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The mostly-Shiite victims were gathered to mark the end of the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, which ended Friday for Iraqi Shiites and a day earlier for Iraqi Sunni Muslims.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;Khan Beni Saad has become a disaster area because of this huge explosion,&#8221; Diyala resident Sayif Ali said. &#8220;This is the first day of Eid, hundreds of people got killed, many injured, and we are still searching for more bodies.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">ISIS claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on Twitter accounts associated with the militant group.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>Read more: <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/IRIA_ISIS-and-Media.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><em>ISIS and Media<\/em><\/span><br \/>\n<\/a><br \/>\nIraq\u2019s Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi described the attack as a \u201cheinous crime\u201d that would not go unpunished.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cI felt the ground shaking,\u201d said Maj. Ahmed al-Timimi, 35, a policeman who was manning a nearby checkpoint and arrived on the scene about 10 minutes after the bombing. \u201cMost of the market was wiped out. Hundreds of cars were burning, and bodies and human organs were everywhere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Timimi said the emergency services were overwhelmed, and residents transported wounded civilians in shopping carts. \u201cIt wasn\u2019t enough.
