The agreement resulted from more than eight hours of meetings between U.S. and Ukrainian officials in the coastal city of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Trump administration lifted its pause on military and intelligence support for Ukraine after Kyiv endorsed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/joint-statement-on-the-united-states-ukraine-meeting-in-jeddah\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">U.S. ceasefire proposal<\/mark><\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. and Ukrainian officials acknowledged that the terms of any ceasefire would be subject to Russia\u2019s approval. There was no immediate comment on the ceasefire proposal from Moscow, which did not attend the talks in Jeddah.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio said that the agreement now puts the pressure on Russia to end the war. \u201cWe\u2019ll take this offer now to the Russians, and we hope that they\u2019ll say yes, that they\u2019ll say yes to peace,\u201d Rubio said. \u201cThe ball is now in their court.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today was a good day for peace. (Image Credit: SPA\/via X)<\/sup><\/em><br><br><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Europe hails Ukraine ceasefire \u2018breakthrough\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>European leaders hailed the announcement as a \u201cbreakthrough\u201d that could help end Russia\u2019s three-year war.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer warmly welcomed the news from Saudi Arabia. \u201cThis is an important moment for peace in Ukraine and we now all need to redouble our efforts to get to a lasting and secure peace as soon as possible,\u201d Starmer says in a statement. He added: \u201cRussia must now agree to a ceasefire and an end to the fighting too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte praised the Trump administration for facilitating a breakthrough in diplomatic efforts to resolve the ongoing war in Ukraine. \u201cI want to really note the fact that, thanks to him, there has now been a breakthrough when it comes to Ukraine, in terms of starting talks with both the Russians and the Ukrainians,\u201d Rutte said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President of the EU Commission Ursula von der Leyen says the bloc welcomes the news, calling it a \u201cpositive development that can be a step towards a comprehensive, just and lasting peace for Ukraine.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe EU is ready to play its full part, together with its partners, in the upcoming peace negotiations,\u201d Ant\u00f3nio Costa, president of the EU Council, said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>U.S.-Ukraine relationship<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the new Trump administration, Washington had paused military aid, withheld security guarantees, and scaled back intelligence-sharing efforts with Kyiv, marking a significant policy shift from its previous unwavering support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S.-Ukraine relationship had been further strained by the suspension of intelligence-sharing and military assistance, a drastic departure from Washington\u2019s previous stance. Despite Trump\u2019s recent statement that intelligence-sharing with Kyiv was &#8220;just about&#8221; to be resumed. Such an agreement would create a joint fund from Ukrainian mineral exports and is seen as crucial for securing sustained American backing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;I think that we&#8217;re going over there with an expectation that we&#8217;re going to make substantial progress,&#8221; Witkoff said during an interview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite these developments, Zelenskyy remained under immense pressure from Trump\u2019s administration to demonstrate a commitment to a swift end to the war. Ukraine\u2019s European allies, on the other hand, maintain that negotiations should come from a position of strength and not be rushed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Security guarantees and temporary truce<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ahead of the talks, Zelenskyy proposed a temporary truce in the air and at sea as a means of testing Moscow\u2019s commitment to peace. &#8220;Realistic proposals are on the table. The key is to move quickly and effectively,&#8221; Zelenskyy posted on X.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, skepticism remains regarding Russia\u2019s willingness to engage in a ceasefire. Russian officials have previously dismissed such proposals as tactical maneuvers designed to buy Ukraine time and prevent further military setbacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. delegation, while open to dialogue, is also pressing Ukraine to consider &#8220;realistic peace,&#8221; implying potential territorial concessions to Russia. According to Russian officials, 337 drones were intercepted, but not before causing casualties and temporary shutdowns at Moscow\u2019s four airports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least three individuals were killed in a strike on a meat warehouse, while Ukraine claimed responsibility for targeting an oil refinery near Moscow and a facility in Russia\u2019s Oryol region. Additionally, Hungary reported a suspension in crude oil shipments via Russia\u2019s Druzhba pipeline because of the assault.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Meanwhile, Russian forces continued their offensive in the Kursk region, aiming to dislodge Ukrainian troops from a strategic area seen as a potential bargaining chip in peace negotiations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Zelenskyy\u2019s meeting with Mohammed bin Salman<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Zelenskyy, who is also traveling to Saudi Arabia, met with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah ahead of key discussions between Ukrainian and U.S. officials.
