{"id":2801,"date":"2015-07-12T11:54:06","date_gmt":"2015-07-12T11:54:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=2801"},"modified":"2015-07-11T19:44:09","modified_gmt":"2015-07-11T19:44:09","slug":"u-s-army-testing-exoskeleton-arm-to-improve-shooting-accuracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/u-s-army-testing-exoskeleton-arm-to-improve-shooting-accuracy\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S. Army testing exoskeleton arm to improve shooting accuracy"},"content":{"rendered":"<h3 class=\"page-sub-title\" style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #333333;\">MAXFAS exoskeleton steadies weapon aim by reducing fatigue and arm tremors<\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mechanical engineers at the U.S. Army Research Laboratory (ARL) say they are <span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/151527\/Army_researcher_s_interest_in_robotics_leads_to_innovative_device\/?from=RSS\" target=\"_blank\">testing<\/a><\/span> an exoskeleton arm called MAXFAS in hopes of training new soldiers\u2019 combat skills faster and generally improve marksmanship on the battlefield.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The exoskeleton is designed to eliminate the non-voluntary tremor in a shooter\u2019s arm while aiming and shooting. Much like a puppet, the exoskeleton has a series of motors and cables to dampen the tremor to allow shooters to gain greater accuracy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #993300;\"><a class=\"text-link\" style=\"color: #993300;\" href=\"http:\/\/udspace.udel.edu\/bitstream\/handle\/19716\/12638\/Daniel_Baechle_thesis.pdf?sequence=1\" target=\"_blank\">Dan Baechle<\/a><\/span>, a mechanical engineer at the US Army Research Laboratory, has developed a new arm-mounted exoskeleton that is designed to be used to train new soldiers to reach shooting proficiency faster.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The exoskeleton for Firearm Aim Stabilization, or\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/151527\/Army_researcher_s_interest_in_robotics_leads_to_innovative_device\/\" target=\"_blank\">MAXFAS,<\/a>\u00a0has one key purpose: to remove arm tremors from the shooting equation. If you hold any object at arm\u2019s length you naturally get slight arm movements or tremors. This movement gets worse if a person is fatigued or carrying lots of weight, both of which soldiers experience and yet they are still expected to shoot with a very high rate of accuracy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Dan Baechle started working on MAXFAS while earning his Master\u2019s degree at the University of Delaware. He got the idea for the device after seeing how exoskeletons help stroke victims relearn how to use limbs.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">During his experiments at ARL, Baechle has found that his exoskeleton arm can help novice shooters because even after taking the device off shooters have seen a reduction in the amount of involuntary movement.\u00a0He said this would be the near-term use for the exoskeleton arm because it would allow the device to remain stationary.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The best marksmen can train themselves to reduce involuntary movements when shooting with different methods such as controlled breathing. It\u2019s harder to execute though when a soldier is fatigued. Baechle has his sights set on designing an arm that soldiers could wear in combat.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">However, designing the exoskeleton for wear on the battlefield is further in the future because of the challenges of shrinking the motors and power source to a weight and size that would not slow down soldiers, Baechle said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The arm exoskeleton is built of carbon fiber and weighs under a pound.
