Foreign ministers from the Group of Seven (G7) nations gathered in Fiuggi, Italy, for a two-day summit on November 25-26, 2024, to conduct high-stakes discussions on pressing global crises, including escalating tensions in the Middle East and the ongoing war in Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The meeting, held under Italy\u2019s G7 presidency, also brought together representatives from the “Arab Quintet,” a coalition of regional powers, to address the urgent need for ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For the first time, the G7 ministers were joined by their counterparts from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, the so-called \u201cArab Quintet,\u201d and the Secretary General of the Arab League.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cKnock on wood,\u201d Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said as he opened the joint session for the G7 foreign ministers and Arab representatives. \u201cWe are perhaps close to a ceasefire in Lebanon,\u201d he said. \u201cLet\u2019s hope it\u2019s true and there\u2019s no backing down at the last minute.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEveryone favors a ceasefire in both scenarios,\u201d Tajani told reporters, adding that Italy had offered to take on an even greater peacekeeping role in Lebanon to oversee any ceasefire deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty announced plans for a minister-level conference in Cairo to mobilize international aid for Gaza, demonstrating the region\u2019s proactive steps toward reconstruction and recovery.<\/p>\n\n\n

Discussion on ICC arrest warrants<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Complicating the discussions were recent developments involving the International Criminal Court (ICC), which has issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, his former defense minister, and a senior Hamas military official.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Italy, a founding member of the ICC, finds itself navigating a delicate balance as it supports the court while maintaining strong ties with Israel, particularly after the October 7 Hamas attacks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While Tajani reaffirmed Italy\u2019s respect for international law, he expressed concerns about the political implications of the warrants. \u201cWe can also not agree with how [Netanyahu\u2019s] government has led the reaction after the massacre of Oct. 7, but now we have to deal with Netanyahu to arrive at peace in Lebanon, peace in Palestine,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


Persistent support for Ukraine<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The G7 meeting also dedicated significant attention to the war in Ukraine, now nearing its third year. With Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha in attendance, the group reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

British Foreign Secretary David Lammy emphasized the coalition\u2019s resolve: \u201cIt\u2019s hugely important that this G7, that all colleagues across the G7 continue to stand with Ukraine for as long as it lasts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
