Germany deployed three Eurofighter jets and one German A400 to the Indo-Pacific to participate in the exercise \u201cNippon Skies\u201d with Japan Air Self Defence Force (JASDF). The exercise was held from July 22 to 25 to reinforce partner relations and interoperability between both air forces.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The German Air Force has deployed aircraft in the Indo-Pacific under the 2024 Pacific Skies initiative to participate in a series of exercises with air forces of Indo-Pacific allies including, Japan, India, and Australia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

During the exercise, the Japanese Air Force’s F-15 fighter jets flew alongside German Eurofighters and A400M aircraft. The air forces of both countries conducted joint refueling operations with an A330 Multi Role Tanker Transport (MRTT) refueling aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the NATO Allied Air Command (AIRCOM) statement, the recent training exercise between the German and the Japanese air forces took place in the airspace around Chitose Air Base in Hokkaido. It was aimed at improving tactical skills and promoting mutual understanding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe aerial maneuvers highlight the expanding defense ties between Tokyo and key European partners \u2013 particularly NATO members \u2013 as they align their strategic interests amid shared economic and security concerns,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n

The Exercise Nippon Skies supports the partnership between Germany and Japan and builds on the relations established during the first deployment to Japan in September 2022. Both air forces exchanged and practiced tactics, techniques, and procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

German Air Force spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Matthias Boehnke said, \u201cWe are pleased to return to our friends in Japan and to expand our relationship build on mutual trust,\u201d adding that \u201cThe solid military partnership between the two air forces allows to further enhance interoperability and respect.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although Germany’s involvement in Nippon Skies is a bilateral initiative, Japan serves as a NATO partner in the Indo-Pacific region. NATO and Japan collaborate bilaterally on various shared cross-regional security challenges, including cyber defense, new technologies, and maritime security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The cooperation between Japan and NATO members also extends through the NATO Alliance\u2019s broader relations with other regional partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn today\u2019s complex global security environment, Japan and NATO are committed to enhancing political dialogue and practical cooperation in order to uphold and strengthen the rules-based international order,\u201d the NATO AIRCOM statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n
