Macron, perhaps underestimating the RN\u2019s national appeal, gambled that the anti-immigration party with historical ties to anti-Semitism would falter in the broader national elections. (Image Credit: X\/@MLP_officiel)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p>RN president Jordan Bardella, who is also the party&#8217;s candidate for prime minister, described the upcoming second round as \u201cthe most important in the history of the French Fifth Republic.\u201d He criticized Macron\u2019s party for being &#8220;wiped out&#8221; and accused the far left of creating an \u201cexistential crisis\u201d that poses \u201ca real danger to France and all the French people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Alliance building ahead<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Sunday&#8217;s vote, 78 of the National Assembly\u2019s 577 seats were won outright by candidates securing more than 50 percent of the vote in their districts. Exit polls by several news agencies show that the RN and its allies could win between 230 and 310 seats in the second voting round on July 7, falling just short of the 289 seats needed for an absolute majority in the National Assembly, France\u2019s lower house of parliament. Le Pen and Bardella remain optimistic, chasing the goal of an absolute majority.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macron, facing the rise of the RN, has called for a \u201cbroad democratic alliance\u201d to prevent the far right from taking power. \u201cFaced with National Rally, the time has come for a broad, clearly democratic and republican alliance for the second round,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macron emphasized the high turnout in the first round, reflecting the importance of this vote for the French people and their desire for political clarity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"fr\" dir=\"ltr\">A vot\u00e9.<br><br>Merci \u00e0 tous ceux qui permettent le bon d\u00e9roulement du scrutin : vous faites vivre la d\u00e9mocratie. Jean-Luc Melenchon, leader of the left-wing New Popular Front, announced his intention to withdraw candidates who placed third in the first round to create two-horse races, thereby maximizing the chances of defeating RN candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Demonstrations against the RN have erupted across France, with a notable protest in Lyon. Laurent Berger, former secretary-general of the French Democratic Confederation of Labor and current president of the European Trade Union Confederation, called for a \u201cblockade\u201d against the RN. \u201cThis evening, our democracy and our republican values are at stake in the face of the National Rally on the threshold of power,\u201d Berger stated on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>The next step in the electoral system<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the French electoral system, if no candidate secures 50 percent in the first round, the top two contenders, along with those who receive at least 12.5 percent of registered voters, move on to the second round. The candidate with the most votes in the run-off wins the constituency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the second round approaches, all eyes will be on the political maneuvers and alliances that could determine the future direction of France.
