Latvian firm, Mosphera, initially donated a small number of these camouflaged, ruggedized electric scooters to Ukrainian forces in early 2023.

Recognizing the utility in the field, two Ukrainian army units have requested over two dozen additional scooters. Additionally, a charity has requested more than 30 scooters on behalf of Ukrainian forces, bringing the total order close to 70 units, according to Mosphera.

A recent statement provided by the company underscores the effectiveness of the scooters, stating they have received “very positive feedback” from Ukrainian soldiers who are using them for “combat tasks.” This positive reception has driven the increased demand for these scooters, which are seen as a game-changer in terms of mobility and stealth in the combat zone.

Mosphera CEO Klavs Asmanis said in a recent interview that the request for additional scooters is currently under consideration by the Latvian government. While waiting for governmental approval, his company is prepared to fulfill the order promptly. Latvia’s Ministry of Defense has not made comments on the deal so far.

Mosphera also showcased its battlefield e-scooter at the Eurosatory 2024, emphasizing its suitability for military applications. Asmanis described the vehicle as the “world’s first electric scooter for military purposes,” powerful enough to be deemed a “standing-position motorcycle.”

With a top speed exceeding 60 miles per hour, the scooter operates silently making it an excellent choice for missions requiring stealth. Its compact size allows for easy concealment in natural cover, and its ability to navigate rough terrain enhances its utility for front-line reconnaissance, scouting, and supply missions.

Mosphera military electric vehicle. Furthermore, their rugged design enables them to handle the diverse and challenging terrains encountered by soldiers in the field.

Asmanis highlighted that the shift towards electric propulsion in military vehicles offers several advantages, including reduced noise, lower heat signatures, and eliminating the need for fuel logistics, which can be a significant logistical challenge in combat zones.

Latvia does not specifically list e-scooters among the numerous items it has supplied to Ukraine since Russia’s invasion in February 2022. However, the nation has highlighted its substantial support, which amounts to nearly 1% of its gross domestic product, positioning Latvia as one of the largest supporters of Ukraine relative to its economic size.

“In cash terms, Latvia’s defense sector has provided military support totaling EUR 370 million ($395 million). This includes unmanned aerial vehicles, helicopters, howitzers, weapons and personal equipment, ammunition, anti-tank weapons, Stinger air defense systems, radars, ration packs, IT equipment, land vehicles, petrol, and various weapons systems,” the defense ministry reported earlier this year.

As the conflict continues, the ongoing support from Latvia and other allied nations remains vital to Ukraine’s defense efforts. The commitment of resources and the delivery of advanced military technologies strengthen Ukraine’s immediate defensive capabilities and send a clear message of solidarity and resolve to the international community.

Mosphera military electric vehicle provides all-terrain mobility to deployed Special Operations Forces in austere locations and across a myriad of special operations missions.
