{"id":2300,"date":"2015-05-13T21:03:33","date_gmt":"2015-05-13T21:03:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=2300"},"modified":"2015-05-13T21:03:45","modified_gmt":"2015-05-13T21:03:45","slug":"nato-troops-to-stay-in-afghanistan-even-after-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/nato-troops-to-stay-in-afghanistan-even-after-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"NATO troops to stay in Afghanistan even after 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The\u00a0secretary general of the North Atlantic\u00a0Treaty Organization (NATO)\u00a0says the Western military alliance will keep some troops in Afghanistan even after its current mission ends in 2016.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Jens Stoltenberg made the remarks following a meeting of the NATO foreign ministers in the\u00a0southwestern Turkish city of Antalya, which was attended by Afghan Foreign Minister Salahuddin Rabbani.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We will maintain our presence in Afghanistan even after the end of our current mission,\u201d Stoltenberg said, adding, &#8220;Unlike our present mission, our future presence will be led by civilians.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The alliance\u2019s future mission tasked with advising Afghan security bodies &#8220;will have a light footprint but will have a military component,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The NATO chief further noted that the military alliance and the Afghan government had agreed on the &#8220;guidelines&#8221; of the new mission.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">NATO\u2019s current so-called Resolute Support mission, involving some 12,500 troops, is expected to end in December 2016.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The United States and its allies invaded Afghanistan in 2001 as part of Washington\u2019s so-called war on terror. The offensive removed Taliban from power, but insecurity still remains across the country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The US-led combat mission in Afghanistan ended on December 31, 2014.
