{"id":2206,"date":"2015-05-07T21:20:51","date_gmt":"2015-05-07T21:20:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=2206"},"modified":"2015-05-07T21:20:51","modified_gmt":"2015-05-07T21:20:51","slug":"kuwait-to-buy-3-billion-fa-18-boeing-fighter-jets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/kuwait-to-buy-3-billion-fa-18-boeing-fighter-jets\/","title":{"rendered":"Kuwait to buy $3 billion F\/A-18 Boeing fighter jets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>Kuwait plans to order 28 Super Hornet advanced fighter jets worth $3 billion from American\u00a0aircraft manufacturing company, Boeing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Boeing could be the latest international aircraft-maker to garner a deal for more fighter aircraft, with word that the US government is nearing agreement to sell up to 40 F\/A-18 E and F Super Hornet strike fighters to Kuwait.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The deal, first reported Wednesday by Reuters, has yet to be officially announced by either the US or Kuwait, but officials in Washington have confirmed an agreement is close.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1431030119699_1536\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The order for the F\/A-18E\/F multirole aircraft marks an important victory for Boeing over European rivals, which had been pitching the Eurofighter Typhoon to the Gulf country.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;We defer to the US government for any details on foreign military sales,&#8221; said Boeing spokeswoman, Caroline Hutcheson.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The prospective sales would be of great help to the American company whose F\/A-18 assembly line in St. Louis, Missouri, is on the verge of shutdown due to lack of orders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;A near-term international order, along with Congressional funding for twelve US Navy Super Hornets this year, would allow the company to continue delivering aircraft without a break in the production line,\u201d Hutcheson said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The deal is expected to be\u00a0finalized next week when\u00a0leaders of the six Arab member states of the Gulf Cooperation Council\u00a0&#8211; Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, the United Arab Emirates, Oman and Qatar &#8211;\u00a0are scheduled to meet with US President Barack Obama in Washington.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FA-18-Fighter-Jet.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2209\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FA-18-Fighter-Jet.jpg?resize=690%2C370\" alt=\"Boeing F\/A-18 Super Hornet Jet\" width=\"690\" height=\"370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FA-18-Fighter-Jet.jpg?w=690&amp;ssl=1 690w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/05\/FA-18-Fighter-Jet.jpg?resize=300%2C161&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 690px) 100vw, 690px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Kuwait\u00a0currently operates a fleet of earlier-generation F\/A-18 Hornets in its air force.<\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1431030119699_1538\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The move would beef up Kuwait&#8217;s air force, as the country takes part in the Saudi-led coalition attacking Huthi rebels in Yemen.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Any deal will would require approval from the US Congress, but it&#8217;s unlikely a proposed sale to Kuwait, a staunch US ally in the Persian Gulf, would meet serious opposition.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">If confirmed, Kuwait would become the second international customer for the Super Hornet, after Australia.
