President of the United States Joe Biden held a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on December 23, 2023.\u00a0The two leaders discussed Israel\u2019s military campaign in Gaza, including its \u2018objectives and phasing\u2019 during their call.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to a statement released by the White House, Biden emphasized the critical need to protect the civilian population including those supporting the humanitarian aid operation, and the importance of allowing civilians to move safely away from areas of ongoing fighting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe leaders discussed the importance of securing the release of all remaining hostages. They agreed to remain in regular consultation both directly and through their respective national security teams,\u201d the statement added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n


\u201cDid not ask for a ceasefire\u201d: Biden<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

While speaking to the media following his phone call with the Israeli Prime Minister, Biden said that he did not ask Israeli leadership for a ceasefire in the war. \u201cI had a long talk with Netanyahu today and it was a private conversation,\u201d Biden told reporters. \u201cI did not ask for a ceasefire,\u201d he said, in response to a question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Biden declined to discuss most details of the call; however, reporters suggest that the call between the two leaders lasted for more than 45 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The conversation between the two leaders took place one day after the adoption of a resolution by the United Nations Security Council (UNSC), urging increased humanitarian assistance for Gaza. However, the resolution stopped short of explicitly calling for a ceasefire or a temporary halt to the ongoing conflict that had been going on for weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n

The resolution specifically called for the prompt, secure, and unimpeded delivery of life-saving aid to Gaza on a significant scale. It was approved after prolonged debates among UNSC members regarding its language, with certain provisions being modified under the influence of Washington’s preferences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A statement released by Netanyahu\u2019s office said the Prime Minister \u201cclarified that Israel will continue the war until all of its goals are achieved,\u201d which include toppling the Hamas terror group and bringing home the hostages being held by Palestinian terrorists in the Strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It noted that Netanyahu \u201cvoiced his appreciation for the US\u2019s position in the Security Council,\u201d after Washington held drawn-out negotiations to keep language demanding a ceasefire out of the resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The pressure has been mounting on Tel Aviv to quickly pare back its military campaign and shift away from high-intensity warfare after nearly three months of a punishing air and ground campaign, amid growing international outcry over the reported death toll in Gaza and a massive humanitarian crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this week,\u00a0U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken said bringing the Israel-Hamas war to an end \u201cas quickly as possible\u201d is a top priority for the Biden administration in the year ahead.<\/p>\n\n\n
