Its removal is a key step in President Barack Obama\u2019s plan to normalize relations between the US and Cuba.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Obama submitted the report and certification documents to Congress that are legally required to officially remove Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism, the White House National Security Council tweeted Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>&#8220;We will continue to have differences with the Cuban government, but our concerns over a wide range of Cuba&#8217;s policies and actions fall outside the criteria that is relevant to whether to rescind Cuba&#8217;s designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism,&#8221;<\/em> the White House said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Obama\u2019s decision came after the State Department reviewed Cuba\u2019s presence on the list, AP reported. The US has not actively accused Cuba of supporting terrorism in years.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cPut simply, [Obama] is acting to remove Cuba from the State Sponsor of Terrorism list because Cuba is not a State Sponsor of Terrorism,<\/em>\u201d Ben Rhodes, the deputy national security advisor for strategic communications and speechwriting, tweeted.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a style=\"color: #0000ff;\" href=\"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/obama-meets-castro-as-us-cuba-hold-historic-meeting-in-decades\/\">Also Read:\u00a0Obama meets Castro as US-Cuba hold historic meeting in decades<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The move to clear Cuba from the State Sponsors of Terrorism list comes just two days after a historic meeting between Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro on Saturday at the Summit of the Americas in Panama City, Panama.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">It was the first meeting of leaders from the two\u00a0countries in over 50 years \u2012 since before the Cuban Revolution, in which Castro\u2019s brother Fidel Castro overthrew the Cuban government in 1959.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In last April\u2019s annual <a href=\"http:\/\/www.state.gov\/j\/ct\/rls\/crt\/2013\/index.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Country Report on Terrorism<\/a>, the State Department admitted that Cuba did not belong on the list.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cThere was no indication that the Cuban government provided weapons or paramilitary training to terrorist groups,\u201d<\/em> the report said.
