After two days of discussion, the UNGA approved a nonbinding resolution calling for a \u201chumanitarian truce\u201d in Gaza.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 193-member world body adopted the resolution, drafted by Jordan, with a vast majority calling for an \u201cimmediate, durable and sustained humanitarian truce leading to a cessation of hostilities.\u201d The resolution was passed with 120-14 votes, while 45 member states,&nbsp;including Australia, the UK, Germany, India, and Canada, abstained on their right to vote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel, the United States, Austria, Croatia, Czechia, Hungary, and five Pacific Island nations were among the 14 countries that voted against the resolution. Eight EU member states, including France, voted in favor of the resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>France\u2019s UN Ambassador Nicolas De Riviere said that his country supported the resolution \u201cbecause nothing could justify the suffering of civilians.\u201d He urged collective efforts to establish a humanitarian truce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution marks the first formal response of the United Nations to the hostilities and violent events since October 7. The United Nations Security Council failed on four occasions to reach a consensus on any action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">120 in favor<br><br>14 against<br><br>45 abstentions<br><br>Countries adopt resolution calling for immediate &amp; sustained humanitarian truce in the Middle East during an Emergency Special Session of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/UNGA?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#UNGA<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XjKyOXQqu8\">https:\/\/t.co\/XjKyOXQqu8<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/nDh3Qj3MtV\">pic.twitter.com\/nDh3Qj3MtV<\/a><\/p>\u2014 United Nations (@UN) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UN\/status\/1717995835491746216?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 27, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>UNGA resolution to achieve peace<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Jordan Ayman Safadi tabled a motion at the 10th Emergency Special Session of the UNGA in New York urging the UNGA to pass the resolution regarding the war on Gaza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jordan, on behalf of 40 different countries including the Arab states, Russia, South Africa, Pakistan, Maldives, and Bangladesh, put forward a resolution to achieve peace and compliance with international law.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Addressing the UNGA, Safadi said \u201cLet the passing of the draft resolution be a message to Palestinians suffering the inferno of this Israeli war on them, let it be a message that the international community sees them, feels their pain and believes that Palestinian lives matter too.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Gaza-bombing.jpeg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Gaza-bombing.jpeg?resize=837%2C523&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-18477\" width=\"837\" height=\"523\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Gaza-bombing.jpeg?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Gaza-bombing.jpeg?resize=300%2C188&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Gaza-bombing.jpeg?resize=768%2C480&amp;ssl=1 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 837px) 100vw, 837px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em><sup>Palestinians evacuate the wounded following an Israeli aerial bombing on Jabaliya, near Gaza City, on October 11, 2023 (Image Credit: AP)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The resolution, which was passed with a required two-thirds majority, calls for the \u201cprotection of civilians and upholding legal and humanitarian obligations.\u201d It demands that all parties \u201cimmediately and fully comply\u201d with obligations under international humanitarian and human rights laws, \u201cparticularly in regard to the protection of civilians and civilian objects.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also urged the protection of humanitarian personnel, humanitarian facilities, and assets, and to enable and facilitate humanitarian access for essential supplies and services to reach all civilians in need in the Gaza Strip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Canada\u2019s failed attempt at amendment<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prior to acting on the resolution, Canada\u2019s UN Ambassador Robert Rae proposed an amendment backed by the United States. Canada proposed that the October 7 events should be highlighted in the resolution, which led to the current crisis. (Image Credit: Reuters\/Mutasem Murtaja)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Pakistan\u2019s Ambassador to the UN, Munir Akram, countered the attempted amendment by saying that if Canada wants to add Hamas\u2019s name to the resolution, it should also add Israel\u2019s name as the State of Israel is the second party in the conflict. \u201cIf Canada was really equitable,\u201d Akram said, \u201cit would agree either to name everybody, both sides who are guilty of having committed crimes, or it would not name either as we chose.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Canada\u2019s proposed amendment failed to attain the required two-thirds majority as the voting remained 88-55 with 23 members abstaining from voting.
