Barack Obama met with his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro to discuss relations between the two countries.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">The meeting in a small conference room on the sidelines of the Summit of the Americas came as the two countries work to end the Cold War enmity that had led to a total freeze of diplomatic ties. And while both leaders proclaimed progress had been made, a key stumbling block &#8212; Cuba&#8217;s place on the U.S. list of countries that sponsor terror &#8212; remained unresolved.<\/p>\n<p class=\"zn-body__paragraph\" style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;This is obviously an historic meeting,&#8221; Obama said at the beginning of his session with Castro, claiming that decades of strain had done little to benefit either Cubans or citizens of the United States.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<em>We are now in a position to move on a path toward the future<\/em>,&#8221; Obama told Castro at the meeting. &#8220;<em>Over time it is possible for us to turn the page and develop a new relationship between our two countries.<\/em>&#8220;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">&#8220;<em>We are willing to discuss everything but we need to be patient, very patient<\/em>,&#8221; Castro replied.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Obama-Castro.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1859\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Obama-Castro.jpg?resize=620%2C465\" alt=\"Obama-Castro\" width=\"620\" height=\"465\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Obama-Castro.jpg?w=620&amp;ssl=1 620w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Obama-Castro.jpg?resize=300%2C225&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The US President has thanked Castro for the \u201c<em>spirit of openness<\/em>\u201d during the remarkable meeting that followed the historic handshake between the two leaders, AFP reported on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cThe Cold War is over &#8230; Cuba is not a threat to the United States,\u201d<\/em> Obama told reporters, stressing the need to make the message clear.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">He also admitted that <em>\u201cthere are still going to be deep and significant differences\u201d<\/em> between the two governments.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Castro responded by saying he is open to dialogue, but warned that Cuba should not look be rushed into anything.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cSo we are willing to discuss everything, but we need to be patient, very patient. Some things we will agree on; others we will disagree,\u201d<\/em> the 83 year-old leader said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Over the past fifty years, relations between the United States and Cuba have been particularly strained. A socialist revolution in the 1950s led to a US embargo and a failed CIA-sponsored military invasion at the Bay of Pigs.
