The highlight of his trip will be the 74th NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania. Biden will make a final stop in Finland to participate in the U.S.-Nordic Leaders\u2019 Summit.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In London, Biden discussed various bilateral issues, economic partnership, and climate financing for developing nations with the British prime minister and monarch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his meeting with Prime Minister Sunak at 10 Downing Street, the U.S. President said that \u201cour relationship is rock solid.\u201d\u00a0The two leaders also discussed the newly announced economic partnership Atlantic Declaration as well as developments in Northern Ireland, including \u201cefforts to ensure continued progress there.\u201d\u00a0Joe Biden and Rishi Sunak agreed to advance economic partnership, safely develop artificial intelligence (AI) and support Ukraine, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/pm-meeting-with-president-biden-of-the-united-states-10-july-2023\" target=\"_blank\">Downing Street said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>NATO summit and Ukraine support<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The discussion focused on the upcoming NATO summit and the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war as Biden and Sunak reviewed preparations for the annual summit in Vilnius which will be attended by all 31 member states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Shoulder to shoulder, what we stand by is what we stand for.<br><br>Freedom. They also discussed the progress of the counter-offensive and emphasized the importance of long-term defense and support to Ukraine. \u201cThey reaffirmed their steadfast support for Ukraine in the face of Russia\u2019s ongoing aggression,\u201d the <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/07\/10\/readout-of-president-joe-bidens-meeting-with-prime-minister-rishi-sunak-of-the-united-kingdom-4\/\" target=\"_blank\">White House said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs we face new and unprecedented challenges to our physical and economic security, our alliances are more important than ever,\u201d Sunak said in a statement. I think we\u2019re moving along in a way that\u2019s positive, but our relationship is rock solid between the United States, Great Britain. And I look forward to our discussions.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Meeting with King Charles III&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. President also met with\u00a0King Charles III during his trip to London. This was the first meeting between the U.S. President and the British monarch since he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/king-charles-and-queen-camilla-crowned-in-first-british-coronation-in-70-years\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"15145\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">ascended to the throne<\/span><\/a>. And what we need to do now is accelerate the development of new technologies and also the deployment of existing technology: solar, wind, nuclear, and so forth,\u201d Biden said during his meeting with the King.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Biden discusses Sweden\u2019s NATO membership with Erdogan\u00a0on call<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Separately on July 9, 2023, U.S. President Joe Biden had a phone conversation with Turkey\u2019s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. According to the White House statement, the two leaders discussed the range of issues that would be debated at the NATO Summit. They expressed their shared commitment to continue supporting Ukraine\u00a0and reviewed efforts to strengthen our bilateral ties. President Biden once again conveyed his desire to welcome Sweden into NATO as soon as possible. \u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following his call with the U.S. President, the Turkish leader went on to state on a televised media appearance that the European Union (EU) should open the way for Turkey\u2019s accession to the bloc before Ankara approves <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/nato-chief-hosts-talks-between-sweden-and-turkey-stalemate-continues\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Sweden\u2019s NATO bid<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cFirst, open the way to Turkey\u2019s membership of the European Union, and then we will open it for Sweden, just as we had opened it for Finland,\u201d&nbsp;Erdogan said before departing for the NATO summit in Lithuania. \u201cThis is what I told\u201d U.S. President Joe Biden, the Turkish leader&nbsp;stated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the first time that the Turkish President has linked Sweden\u2019s accession into the NATO alliance with Turkey\u2019s bid to join the EU. Turkey first applied to be a member of the European Economic Community, a predecessor to the EU, in 1987. It became an EU candidate country in 1999 and formally launched membership negotiations with the bloc in 2005.
