The deal which is worth up to $8.7 billion (\u20ac8 billion<\/strong>)<strong> was announced by Germany\u2019s Budget Committee on July 5, 2023.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Germany\u2019s Budget Committee held a meeting to address the country\u2019s military procurement projects. The meeting focused on \u201cthree key initiatives to strengthen collaboration with partners and enhance troop capabilities for national and alliance defense\u201d. Procurement of 60 CH-47F <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/chinook\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Chinook<\/span><\/a> heavy transport helicopters from the U.S. was authorized as one of three initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Under the latest deal, the German Army, Bundeswehr, will receive the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.boeing.com\/defense\/chinook-block-ii\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Block II<\/span><\/a> Standard Range\u201d variant of the Chinook helicopter, which includes the capability for aerial refueling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/germany\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Germany<\/span><\/a> has been planning to purchase the Chinook heavy-lift helicopters from Boeing since last year to replace its aging fleet of CH-53 helicopters. Originally, the project was allotted a budget of 6 billion Euros ($6.57 billion), however, the latest procurement deal includes an infrastructure cost as well as other equipment worth more than 2 billion euros ($2.2 billion).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The committee announced that 47 of the 60 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/helicopter\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">helicopters<\/span><\/a> will be based town of Holzdorf, some 50 kilometers south of Berlin, adding that the first of several newly purchased Arrow-3 missile defense\u00a0systems would also be deployed around the same area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/CH-47-Chinook-helicopter-Germany.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/CH-47-Chinook-helicopter-Germany.jpg?resize=838%2C450&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15397\" width=\"838\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/CH-47-Chinook-helicopter-Germany.jpg?w=690&amp;ssl=1 690w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/CH-47-Chinook-helicopter-Germany.jpg?resize=300%2C161&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 838px) 100vw, 838px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em><sup>The U.S. Department of State has approved the sale of CH-47F Chinook helicopters to Germany. (Image Credit: Boeing)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The German committee also approved the procurement of 3,058 highly mobile, all-terrain, all-wheel-drive vehicles, along with necessary accessories. \u201cThese are highly mobile, all-terrain, and all-wheel-drive wheeled vehicles that will transport soldiers, equipment, armament, ammunition, and material, thus making the airborne forces on the ground more mobile,\u201d the Bundeswehr statement read.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Chinook Block II<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Boeing\u2019s H-47 Chinook Block II offers next-generation heavy-lift capabilities for critical future missions.<\/li><li>It is powered by cutting-edge technologies such as redesigned fuel tanks, strengthened fuselage, and improved drivetrain.<\/li><li>Enables soldiers to meet heavy-lift mission requirements and allows for future upgrades.<\/li><li>Enhances readiness for the military operations with increased speed, range, and intelligence.<\/li><li>More than 950 Chinooks are in use across 20 countries, delivering exceptional production, maintenance, and cost efficiencies.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><br>Germany defense budget<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being Europe\u2019s largest economy, Germany\u2019s annual defense spending did not meet the NATO threshold of 2% of the annual GDP for several years. However, the war in Ukraine has brought a major transition in German defense policy. Berlin has shifted its focus on military modernization and committed 100 billion Euros to the Bundeswehr, Germany\u2019s armed forces.<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last week, the German cabinet approved the first draft of the 2024 budget. Germany\u2019s upcoming national budget saw an overall decline but defense spending is set to rise by 1.7 billion euros ($1.8 billion) compared to 2023 as Europe\u2019s biggest economy plans to reach a NATO target of spending 2% of gross domestic product on defense next year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Germany is also expanding its role in NATO. Last month, Germany hosted&nbsp;the largest military exercise in NATO\u2019s history, the Air Defender 2023.
