Grossi\u2019s visit was aimed at finalizing and presenting the IAEA safety review report about Japan\u2019s plans to release treated but radioactive water from the nuclear power station into the sea. &nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Japanese government has been planning to start releasing the radioactive water from its tsunami-wrecked Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant into the Pacific Ocean. The United Nation\u2019s nuclear watchdog <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/iaea\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">IAEA<\/span><\/a> has given the green light to the controversial plans, despite the grave concerns raised by several regional actors, especially China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During his visit to Japan, IAEA Chief Rafael Mariano Grossi met with Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in Tokyo. Grossi quoted the IAEA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iaea.org\/sites\/default\/files\/iaea_comprehensive_alps_report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">safety review report<\/span><\/a> saying that the discharge of the treated water would have negligible impact on the people and environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">.<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/iaeaorg?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@IAEAorg<\/a> has now finished its assessment of <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Japan?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Japan<\/a>\u2019s plans to release the water stored at the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Fukushima?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#Fukushima<\/a> Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant, confirming the plans to be in line with IAEA safety standards.<br><br>\ud83c\udfa5 Full video: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XW7vTswLnr\">https:\/\/t.co\/XW7vTswLnr<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/tUcqi4bW7j\">pic.twitter.com\/tUcqi4bW7j<\/a><\/p>\u2014 Rafael MarianoGrossi (@rafaelmgrossi) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/rafaelmgrossi\/status\/1676172764728766464?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 4, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Grossi also visited the Fukushima Daiichi plant during his four-day-long tour. \u201cWhat is happening is not something exceptional, some strange plan that has been devised only to be applied here, and sold to you,\u201d Grossi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is, as certified by the IAEA, the general practice that is agreed by and observed in many, many places all over the world,\u201d he said in his opening remarks in Iwaki, about 40 kilometers south of the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addressing people\u2019s doubts and concerns, Grossi said: \u201cI must admit I don&#8217;t have a magic wand, but we do have one thing. We are going to stay here with you for decades to come until the last drop of the water which is accumulated around the reactor has been safely discharged.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The IAEA Task Force that prepared the safety review report was made up of top specialists from within the Agency advised by internationally recognized <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/nuclear\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">nuclear safety<\/span><\/a> experts from eleven countries. (Image Credit: IAEA)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan\u2019s Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant is a disabled power plant located in Japan\u2019s Fukushima prefecture. The plant <a href=\"https:\/\/world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/safety-and-security\/safety-of-plants\/fukushima-daiichi-accident.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">suffered major infrastructural damage<\/span><\/a> during the March 2011 tsunami which destroyed the unit\u2019s cooling system and triggered one of the worst nuclear disasters since the Chornobyl incident. China\u2019s Foreign Ministry rejected IAEA\u2019s review report and said that it cannot be served as a &#8220;shield&#8221; or &#8220;green light&#8221; for Japan&#8217;s discharge of nuclear-contaminated water into the ocean.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ministry said that the report is biased and failed to reflect the opinions of all experts involved in the evaluation work. It further added that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/japan\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Japan<\/span><\/a> has received help from all over the world for more than 12 years to contain the nuclear disaster. Today, however, the country chose to transfer the risk of nuclear contamination to all mankind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the severe backlash from its neighbors, Japan is expected to start the discharging process as early as next month.
