The war games took place in strategically contested waters as China\u2019s People\u2019s Liberation Army kept a close watch on the joint military activity.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan\u2019s largest helicopter destroyer JS&nbsp;Izumo&nbsp;(DDH-183) participated in the exercise along with destroyer JS&nbsp;Samidare&nbsp;(DD-106). The Royal Australian Navy participated in the drills with HMAS&nbsp;Anzac&nbsp;(FFH150) frigate and P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a statement released by JMSDF, the exercise focused on increasing interoperability in tactical operations including anti-surface and anti-air warfare. The statement said that the exercise was a part of Japan\u2019s Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023 (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mod.go.jp\/msdf\/en\/exercises\/IPD23.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">IPD23<\/span><\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">24-25 JUN, <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/IPD23?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#IPD23<\/a> JS IZUMO and JS SAMIDARE conducted a bilateral exercise (Trident23) with the Royal <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Australian_Navy?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@Australian_Navy<\/a> frigate HMAS ANZAC and RAAF P-8A in the South China Sea to improve their tactical capabilities and interoperability with the RAN and RAAF. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FOIP?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#FOIP<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/M2mQCSKnnf\">pic.twitter.com\/M2mQCSKnnf<\/a><\/p>&mdash; JMSDF Self-Defense Fleet ENG (@JMSDF_SDF_ENG) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JMSDF_SDF_ENG\/status\/1673579123187544066?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 27, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br>\n\n\n\n<p>The commander of Japan\u2019s first surface unit of the IPD23, Rear Admiral Nishiyama Takahiro termed Australia as Japan\u2019s \u2018special strategic partner\u2019. He said, \u201cLike our country, Australia, an ally of the United States, is a special strategic partner in the Indo-Pacific region, sharing not only universal values but also strategic interests in security.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that \u201cThe relationship between the JMSDF and the Royal Australian Forces has never been stronger and more important, and the JMSDF will promote further improvement of interoperability and mutual understanding with the Royal Australian Navy in order to improve the security environment in the Indo-Pacific region.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The flight data of Australia\u2019s P-8A Poseidon aircraft showed that the plane flew over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/south-china-sea\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">South China Sea<\/span><\/a> from the Clark Air Base in the Philippines on June 24. The plane also crossed contested air space in the South China Sea that falls behind China\u2019s nine-dash line. A spokesperson said that the department \u201croutinely interacts with foreign militaries when operating in international airspace and international waters as a matter of course&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Japan\u2019s Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Japan\u2019s largest destroyer, JS Izumo, is currently deployed in the South China Sea for the Indo-Pacific Deployment 2023.
