{"id":15666,"date":"2023-05-30T09:42:27","date_gmt":"2023-05-30T06:42:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/?p=15666"},"modified":"2023-06-02T12:08:49","modified_gmt":"2023-06-02T09:08:49","slug":"chinas-first-domestically-developed-passenger-plane-c919-enters-service","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/chinas-first-domestically-developed-passenger-plane-c919-enters-service\/","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s first domestically developed passenger plane C919 enters service"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>China\u2019s domestically produced passenger jet made its first successful commercial flight from Shanghai to Beijing, marking a major milestone in ending Airbus and Boeing\u2019s decades-long hegemony over commercial airliners.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The C919 has been developed by the Shanghai-based Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (<a href=\"http:\/\/english.comac.cc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">COMAC<\/span><\/a>). To meet the increasing demand for China\u2019s domestic and international air travel, the development of China\u2019s domestically produced airliner began almost 16 years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first passenger C919 aircraft is operated by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/china\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">China<\/span><\/a> Eastern Airlines. The plane took off from Shanghai\u2019s Hongqiao Airport on flight MU9191 on May 28, 2023, carrying 130 passengers. It landed at Beijing\u2019s Capital Airport, 40 minutes before its scheduled time. All the passengers received red boarding passes and a curated meal to commemorate C919\u2019s first commercial flight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<br><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">China soars to new heights as the first domestically built C919 passenger jet makes its inaugural commercial flight, challenging the longtime Airbus-Boeing duopoly <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FEWosu214D\">pic.twitter.com\/FEWosu214D<\/a><\/p>\u2014 IRIA (@IRIA_Research) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/IRIA_Research\/status\/1662878185372127232?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">May 28, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe first commercial flight is a coming-of-age ceremony of the new aircraft, and C919 will get better and better if it stands the test of the market,\u201d said Zhang Xiaoguang, director of the marketing and sales department of COMAC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The company has already received more than 1,200 orders for C919, mostly from China\u2019s domestic airlines. China Eastern Airlines ordered five C919 passenger planes in March 2021 and received the first unit in December 2022. COMAC plans to produce 150 C919 planes in the next five years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Challenge to Boeing and Airbus?<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chinese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/aviation\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">aviation<\/span><\/a> analysts hope that the C919 plane would perform at par with its Western counterparts, the Boeing 737 MAX, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/airbus\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Airbus<\/span><\/a> A320.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the prejudice against \u2018made-in-China\u2019 products, along with the geopolitical tensions, could restrict the C919\u2019s immediate entry into the Western market, Chinese observers are confident about the domestic market&#8217;s potential to significantly boost the C919, given China\u2019s position as the world\u2019s second-largest civil aerospace and aviation services market after the United States.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/images\/China-COMAC-C919.JPG?w=1016&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\"\/><figcaption><em><sup>IRIA Infographics<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>COMAC is particularly targeting the Chinese and Asian markets to sell its commercial jetliner. For decades, Asia and particularly China has been one of the largest markets for European manufacturer Airbus and its American rival <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/boeing\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Boeing<\/span><\/a>. The two companies have capitalized on the region\u2019s rapidly increasing demand for air travel. (Image Credit: Wikipedia)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Although the jet was assembled in China, it relies on Western producers for several avionic parts, including the engines. Currently, the C919 is powered by CFM LEAP-1C engines, which are being made in partnership with General Electric and France&#8217;s Safran. COMAC plans to use domestically produced jet engines in the future to reduce reliance on other manufacturers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>C919 is not the first commercial passenger plane produced by COMAC. Its predecessor, the ARJ21, is a short-haul, 90-seat aircraft that entered commercial operation in 2016 and is flown by major Chinese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/airline\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">airlines<\/span><\/a> as well as Indonesia\u2019s TransNusa.
