As the United States continues to bombard Islamic State militants from the air, US Central Command announced that the military bombed an unmanned drone being operated by the extremist group in Iraq.<\/p>\n

CENTCOM made the announcement<\/a> Wednesday, marking the first time the US-led coalition has taken aim at a drone that was being used by the Islamic State (IS, also known as ISIS\/ISIL). Eleven airstrikes in total were conducted between March 17 and 18.<\/p>\n

Details about the drone and the strike are slim, with CENTCOM saying only that the military destroyed a \u201cremotely piloted aircraft and an ISIL vehicle.\u201d The strike occurred near Fallujah, which remains controlled by militants.<\/p>\n

The drone was a \u201csmall, unarmed hand-held type of the sort that can be purchased commercially,\u201d<\/em> CENTCOM spokesman Maj. Kim Michelsen told the Associated Press. He added that ISIS was using the drone for surveillance purposes and that\u2019s why the US focused its sight on the aircraft.<\/p>\n

While this drone may not have been armed or capable of flying very high, some are concerned that the group will eventually be able to get its hands on more dangerous technology \u2013 particularly if it\u2019s able to steal any drones the US may sell to allies in the region.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course they\u2019ll get more weapons, more sophisticated weapons,\u201d<\/em> Daniel McAdams of the Ron Paul Institute told RT\u2019s Ben Swann. \u201cThese people have already shown themselves to be incredibly adept at making money \u2013 they seem like the greatest capitalists in the region. They\u2019re selling oil; they\u2019re selling heroin; they\u2019re selling everything. They\u2019re making tons of money.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

\u201cI think it does suggest they\u2019ll get more and more sophisticated equipment,\u201d<\/em> he added, referring to the drone incident. “And what they want is the US to engage them, and the US is playing their game.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Speaking with the Daily Beast<\/a>, Christopher Harmer, a senior naval analyst with the Middle East Security Project in Washington, DC, added that even low-tech drones could be fashioned into deadly devices.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey don\u2019t have reusable attack drones, but I think it is just a matter of time before they jury-rig surveillance drones into flying IEDs,\u201d<\/em> he said. \u201cBasically, they could turn them into little kamikaze drones.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

This is the first drone to be shot down by the US-led coalition in Iraq, but officials believe ISIS has several.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
