{"id":13251,"date":"2023-01-12T00:14:22","date_gmt":"2023-01-11T22:14:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/?p=13251"},"modified":"2023-01-12T00:14:23","modified_gmt":"2023-01-11T22:14:23","slug":"leaders-of-us-canada-mexico-discuss-trade-and-immigration","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/leaders-of-us-canada-mexico-discuss-trade-and-immigration\/","title":{"rendered":"Leaders of US, Canada, Mexico discuss trade and immigration"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>United States\u00a0President Joe Biden, Mexican President Andr\u00e9s Manuel L\u00f3pez Obrador, and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau offered a unified front as they sought to downplay their frustrations and tensions on migration and trade.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The two presidents, joined by the Canadian prime minister, met at North American Leaders\u2019 Summit, an annual event informally referred to as a meeting of the &#8220;three amigos.&#8221;\u00a0They agreed to push for progress on issues beyond immigration, including drug trafficking, climate change, and supply chains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The summit took place as the immigration issue was flaring again in the United States, however, Biden dismissed criticism from Republicans, and Democrats, calling them the \u201cextremes\u201d and saying he was pursuing a middle ground in his approach to immigration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brushing\u00a0tensions\u00a0aside,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2023\/01\/10\/remarks-by-president-biden-prime-minister-trudeau-and-president-lopez-obrador-in-joint-press-conference\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Biden said<\/span><\/a>, \u201cWe\u2019re true partners, the three of us, working together with mutual respect \u2026 to advance a safer and more prosperous future for all of our people.\u201d He added that the three leaders \u201cshare a common vision for the future, grounded on common values.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Together, we\u2019re building a stronger North America. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/XEGMLVMZvs\">pic.twitter.com\/XEGMLVMZvs<\/a><\/p>\u2014 President Biden (@POTUS) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/POTUS\/status\/1613216610357022737?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 11, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden recently announced an agreement with Mexico to accept the return of tens of thousands of Cubans, Nicaraguans, Venezuelans, and Haitians who cross the border without authorization. &#8220;There can no longer be any question \u2014 none \u2014 in today\u2019s interconnected world: We cannot wall ourselves off,&#8221; Biden said in Mexico.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The summit in Mexico City comes at a politically fraught time for Biden, who faces pressure from Congress to act more forcefully to combat the increasing flow of the drug across the U.S.-Mexico border.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mexican leader, known as AMLO,\u00a0who has been openly challenging American policies toward his country, praised Biden\u2019s approach, referring indirectly to President Donald Trump\u2019s efforts to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/US-President-Bidem-arrives-Mexico.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1016\" height=\"678\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/US-President-Bidem-arrives-Mexico.jpg?resize=1016%2C678&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-13250\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/US-President-Bidem-arrives-Mexico.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/US-President-Bidem-arrives-Mexico.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/US-President-Bidem-arrives-Mexico.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/US-President-Bidem-arrives-Mexico.jpg?resize=589%2C392&amp;ssl=1 589w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/US-President-Bidem-arrives-Mexico.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1016px) 100vw, 1016px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em><sup>U.S. President Joe Biden arrived in Mexico to meet with President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada at the North American Leaders\u2019 Summit. And we thank you for that, sir \u2014 although some might not like it, although the conservatives don\u2019t like it.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Biden and Obrador vow to tackle immigration<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although no additional major programs to tackle migration were announced at the summit, Mexican and U.S. officials said they would continue discussions on increasing the number of migrants returned to Mexico and expanding legal pathways for migrants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden and L\u00f3pez Obrador vowed to reform and streamline the flow of migrants from Mexico to the United States. &#8220;We\u2019re working together to address this challenge in a way that upholds our nations\u2019 laws and protects the human rights of migrants escaping desperate circumstances,&#8221; Biden said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the joint press conference, L\u00f3pez Obrador also asked President Biden to &#8220;insist&#8221; Congress to regularize the migration of millions of Mexicans who have been in the States working, living in the United States, and contributing to the development of America.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p lang=\"es\" dir=\"ltr\">Bienvenido a su casa, presidente Biden. Hay condiciones inmejorables para consolidar la integraci\u00f3n de Am\u00e9rica. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/VggTgYA9gt\">pic.twitter.com\/VggTgYA9gt<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Andr\u00e9s Manuel (@lopezobrador_) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/lopezobrador_\/status\/1612652655125626880?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">January 10, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote> <script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<p>Mexican President called Justin Trudeau \u201ca great ally of Mexico\u201d and thanked him for the \u201cextraordinary and fraternal program that consists of granting temporary working visas for laborers, workers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Canadian temporary work-visa program has benefited some 25,000 Mexican men and women. \u201cThe path to orderly migration is the one to follow,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Biden and Trudeau bilateral meeting<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The summit also saw the first formal bilateral for Biden and Trudeau since the Summit of the Americas in June. During the meeting, President Biden said that he plans to travel to Canada in March this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>Trade talks \u2014 Climate and chips<\/strong> <strong>deals<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Besides migration, the three leaders also reaffirmed their commitment to deepening trade between their economies and upholding the terms of the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA) \u2014 updated in 2018 and known as NAFTA 2.0 (North American Free Trade Agreement) which was first formalized in 1994.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the last 30 years, \u201cthe economies of Mexico, U.S., and Canada have become closely tied because of NAFTA. This trade agreement helped our economies grow and created millions of good employments, and the trade amongst our borders drew investors from the world over\u201d Trudeau said at the summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The leaders of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico announced commitments to\u00a0build the semiconductor industry\u00a0in the region,\u00a0tackle the flow of fentanyl\u00a0into the United States, and a climate pledge to cut methane emissions.
