{"id":1264,"date":"2015-03-01T15:51:11","date_gmt":"2015-03-01T15:51:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=1264"},"modified":"2015-03-01T15:51:11","modified_gmt":"2015-03-01T15:51:11","slug":"mali-government-signs-peace-deal-rebels-coalition-ask-for-more-time","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/mali-government-signs-peace-deal-rebels-coalition-ask-for-more-time\/","title":{"rendered":"Mali government signs peace deal, rebels coalition ask for more time"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><strong>The Malian government has signed a peace deal with some rebel groups to end fighting in northern regions, but the main Tuareg rebel coalition has asked for more time for further consultations with its grassroots.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The peace agreement, brokered by the United Nations and neighboring Algeria,\u00a0was signed on Sunday in Algiers.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The development came\u00a0after eight months of tough negotiations between the Malian government and the militants in the Algerian capital.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The Tuareg alliance, which includes the main rebel group National Movement for the Liberation of Azawad, said it had asked for a \u201creasonable delay\u201d for further consultations before signing the deal.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cAn agreement that has not been shared with the people of the region has little chance of being implemented on the ground,\u201d an alliance representative said.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under the deal, a raft of powers will be transferred from the Malian government to the country\u2019s violence-hit north.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cThe agreement will be signed by all the groups,\u201d Algerian Foreign Minister Ramtane Lamamra said, adding,\u00a0&#8220;The delay asked by the rebel alliance was only an indication that they are trying \u201cto secure the maximum support for the deal.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Al-Qaeda-linked militants were in control of restive north, known as Azawad,\u00a0for more than nine months before a military operation led by France in 2013 pushed them out of some parts of the region.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to the agreement, local assemblies will be established under supervision of a directly-elected president and as of 2018, Mali\u2019s government will allocate 30 percent of its revenues to local authorities, especially in the north.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Moreover, the militants will be integrated into the Malian army and will be stationed in the country\u2019s\u2019 northern regions.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Mali&#8217;s northern region has been restive since 1960s.
