Videos and photos circulating on social media showed some bodies lying on the street. The flames and smoke can be seen from a distance in the videos shared on social media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Video footage showed ambulances, fire trucks, and police rushing to the scene. Turkish media reported that the police closed Istiklal Street,&nbsp;just off Taksim Square, due to the possibility of a second explosion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the attack reported to be the first major bomb blast in Istanbul in several years. However, Turkish Interior Minister Suleyman Soylu told reporters on Monday that officials believe Kurdish separatists from the Kurdistan Worker\u2019s Party (PKK) and the Democratic Union Party (PYD) were most likely behind the bomb attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Explosion hits Istanbul\u2019s popular tourist street Istiklal Avenue. Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay said the blast was thought to be a terrorist attack carried out by a woman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Turkish news agency Anadolu, Vice President Fuat Oktay said &#8220;We consider it to be a terrorist act as a result of an attacker, whom we consider to be a woman, detonating the bomb.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the explosion on Istiklal Avenue was a \u201cheinous attack\u201d and its perpetrators would be punished. During a press conference before his departure for Indonesia to attend the G-20 summit, the Turkish president stated that \u201cbased on initial information from the governor, the explosion could be a suspected act of terrorism.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He also vowed that those who waged terrorism against the Turkish nation would fail. \u201cEfforts to defeat Turkey and the Turkish people through terrorism will fail today just as they did yesterday and as they will again tomorrow,\u201d Erdogan said. \u201cOur people can rest assured that the culprits behind the attack will be punished as they deserve,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"tr\" dir=\"ltr\">\u0130stiklal Caddesi\u2019nde meydana gelen bombal\u0131 sald\u0131r\u0131da vefat eden karde\u015flerimize Allah\u2019tan rahmet, yak\u0131nlar\u0131na sab\u0131r, yaral\u0131lar\u0131m\u0131za acil \u015fifalar diliyorum.<br><br>\u00dclkemize, milletimize, \u0130stanbul\u2019umuza ge\u00e7mi\u015f olsun.<\/p>&mdash; Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan (@RTErdogan) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RTErdogan\/status\/1591822521300574210?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 13, 2022<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Istanbul city\u2019s Governor Ali Yerlikaya shared the initial details of the attack and said that the injured are being treated. \u201cWe pray for God\u2019s mercy on those who lost their lives and a speedy recovery to the injured,\u201d he tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Istanbul\u2019s Chief Public Prosecutor\u2019s Office has immediately launched an investigation into the explosion, the state-run Anadolu news agency reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Turkish media regulator, Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTUK), has imposed a temporary broadcast ban on sharing footage of the explosion or reports on all visual and audio news outlets and on social media. Turkey was hit by a string of bombings between 2015 and 2017 by the ISIS group as well as Kurdish militants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Condolences and condemnation<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several countries including Azerbaijan, Egypt, Pakistan, Ukraine, Sweden Germany, Greece, and Saudi Arabia condemned the attack and offered condolences to the victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg described the images from Istanbul as shocking. \u201cMy thoughts and deepest condolences to all those affected and to the Turkish people.
