Top diplomats from Azerbaijan and Armenia met in Geneva on October 3, 2022, as a follow-up to the EU-mediated peace talks that took place between the leaders of the two countries in Brussels last month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A statement released by Azerbaijan\u2019s foreign ministry stated that Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov met his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan in Geneva to begin \u201cdrafting the text of the peace treaty\u201d. Azerbaijan called for \u201cfull withdrawal of the Armenian armed units from the territories of Azerbaijan, the opening of transport and communication lines\u201d, the ministry said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Armenia released a statement regarding the meeting stating that \u201cThe parties exchanged ideas on the peace treaty, ensuring the rights and security guarantees of Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statement further said that the Armenian side reaffirmed its demands of Azerbaijani troops\u2019 \u201cwithdrawal from the sovereign territory of Armenia.\u201d The two sides also discussed releasing of prisoners and \u201cthe introduction of international mechanisms for controlling the situation on the border\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In response to the release of prisoners, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian\u00a0tweeted \u201cI highly appreciate the efforts of the United States [in] assisting to return our 17 POW (Prisoners of war).\u201d He expressed that he hopes to see further &#8220;progress in resolving both humanitarian issues and establishing peace in the region&#8221; through such international mediation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With Moscow increasingly isolated on the world stage following its invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. and the European Union have taken a leading role in mediating the Armenia-Azerbaijan normalization process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Armenia-Azerbaijan-ministers-meeting.jpg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Armenia-Azerbaijan-ministers-meeting.jpg?resize=837%2C449&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11770\" width=\"837\" height=\"449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Armenia-Azerbaijan-ministers-meeting.jpg?w=690&amp;ssl=1 690w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Armenia-Azerbaijan-ministers-meeting.jpg?resize=300%2C161&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 837px) 100vw, 837px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em><sup>Azerbaijan\u2019s Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov has met his Armenian counterpart Ararat Mirzoyan in the Georgian capital Tbilisi. Blinken hailed Azerbaijan\u2019s decision to release the prisoners.
