{"id":1151,"date":"2015-02-22T07:19:41","date_gmt":"2015-02-22T07:19:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/box5917.temp.domains\/~iriacom\/\/news\/?p=1151"},"modified":"2015-02-22T07:21:37","modified_gmt":"2015-02-22T07:21:37","slug":"us-considering-to-shift-the-deadline-for-afghan-withdrawal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/us-considering-to-shift-the-deadline-for-afghan-withdrawal\/","title":{"rendered":"US considering to shift the deadline for Afghan withdrawal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">US\u00a0is considering shifting the deadline for troops withdrawal from Afghanistan to make sure the \u201cprogress\u201d from over 13 years of US operations in the country \u201csticks,\u201d the new US Defense Secretary said during a surprise visit to Kabul.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cOur priority now is to make sure this progress sticks,\u201d<\/em> Defense Secretary Ashton Carter said in a news conference in Kabul with Afghan President Ashraf Ghani. <em>\u201cThat is why President Obama is considering a number of options to reinforce our support for President Ghani\u2019s security strategy, including possible changes to the timeline for our drawdown of US troops.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Under the current arrangement, the 11,000-strong US force should be cut to roughly 5,000 by the end of 2015, before pulling out altogether the following year, when Obama will leave office. By the end of 2016 the US military presence is expected to shrink to a <em>\u201cnormal\u201d<\/em> embassy security contingent.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Obama is scheduled to visit Kabul next month, where Ghani will likely discuss US troop numbers with the American leader <em>\u201cin the context of the larger partnership.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>Days after swearing in as <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SecDef?src=hash\">#SecDef<\/a>, Hon. But while traveling with Carter on Saturday, Campbell said that his focus for now was sustaining enough US trainers, advisors and counter-terrorism forces in Afghanistan.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cRight now I think we\u2019re comfortable looking at &#8217;15 and &#8217;16,\u201d<\/em> Campbell told reporters.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ghani, however, told CBS&#8217; 60 Minutes last month that Obama should reconsider the 2016 withdrawal deadline, citing security concerns.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cDeadlines concentrate the mind. But deadlines should not be dogmas,\u201d<\/em> Ghani said. <em>\u201cIf both parties or, in this case, multiple partners, have done their best to achieve the objectives and progress is very real, then there should be willingness to re-examine a deadline.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Paving the way for Ghani\u2019s visit to US, Carter said that counterterrorism is <em>\u201ccontinuing preoccupation<\/em>\u201d of his unannounced trip to Kabul, while <em>\u201crethinking the details of the counterterrorism mission and how the environment has changed [in Afghanistan]\u201d<\/em> is a priority for both countries.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">With the rise of the influence of the Islamic State in the region and the pace at which they are attracting new recruits, Cambell for his part noted that some former Taliban commanders have already \u201crebranded\u201d themselves as fighters for the Islamic State.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\"><em>\u201cYou saw how fast this went in Iraq,\u201d<\/em> Campbell told reporters at a separate press conference, referring to the rise of recruits for the caliphate cause. <em>\u201cAll of us don\u2019t want that to happen here.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ghani, however, sounded positive about the prospects of peace talks with Taliban, saying the <em>\u201cgrounds for peace have never been better in the last 36 years.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Talks with the Taliban stalled after the US focused on withdrawing its troops from Afghanistan after America\u2019s longest-ever overseas war, which began soon after 9\/11. At the height of the US invasion of Afghanistan, some 130,000 US and NATO troops participated in the operation. Last year the mission wrapped up its combat operations against the insurgency.
