{"id":11490,"date":"2022-09-19T22:49:11","date_gmt":"2022-09-19T20:49:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/?p=11490"},"modified":"2022-09-19T22:49:15","modified_gmt":"2022-09-19T20:49:15","slug":"us-releases-taliban-drug-lord-in-exchange-for-us-navy-veteran","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/us-releases-taliban-drug-lord-in-exchange-for-us-navy-veteran\/","title":{"rendered":"US releases Taliban drug lord in exchange for US Navy veteran"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Afghanistan\u2019s Taliban have freed American engineer and Navy veteran Mark Frerichs in exchange for Taliban-linked Afghan tribal leader Bashir Noorzai, the White House confirmed.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mark Frerichs, who had spent more than a decade in Afghanistan as a civilian contractor, was\u00a0abducted <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/afghanistan-9692b889f281caca38344fb5e925953c\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">in January 2020<\/span><\/a>\u00a0and is believed to have been held since then by the Taliban-linked Haqqani network. Frerichs was held in captivity for 31 months. He was traded for\u00a0Bashir Noorzai, a warlord and prominent member of the Taliban, who was in prison in the U.S. on drug trafficking charges for 17 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBringing Mark home has been a top priority for President Biden and his national security team,\u201d a statement from the office of the U.S. President read. The release of Frerichs \u201cis the culmination of years of tireless work,\u201d President Joe Biden said in a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/09\/19\/statement-by-president-biden-on-the-release-of-mark-frerichs\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">statement<\/span><\/a>. \u201cBringing the negotiations that led to Mark\u2019s freedom to a successful resolution required difficult decisions, which I did not take lightly,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biden said Frerichs\u2019 release \u201cdemonstrates our enduring commitment\u201d\u00a0to the safe release and return of all Americans who are held hostage or wrongfully detained abroad. \u201cWe will not stop until they are reunited with their families,\u201d he said, adding that the administration has \u201cMuch more work to do in many other cases.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Frerichs was able to walk on his own onto the aircraft, <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2022\/09\/19\/politics\/mark-frerichs-released-afghanistan-taliban\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">according to a source familiar with the matter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\"> <\/span>said. He is currently in Doha, Qatar and his physical and mental condition appear good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken welcomed Frerichs\u2019s release and committed to working to free other Americans \u201carbitrarily and unjustly\u201d detained abroad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMark\u2019s return to his loved ones is the result of intense engagement with the Taliban,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/welcoming-the-release-of-mark-frerichs\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Blinken said<\/span><\/a>, thanking the State Department team and other partners in Qatar for securing the release. \u201cOur commitment to bring Mark home never wavered, and it will never waver for the Americans who are held captive anywhere around the world\u201d he vowed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Mark Frerichs is coming home after two and half years in captivity in Afghanistan. His sister, Charlene Cakora, said in a statement: \u201cI am so happy to hear that my brother is safe and on his way home to us. Our family has prayed for this each day of the more than 31 months he has been a hostage. We never gave up hope that he would survive and come home safely to us.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>U.S. hostage exchanged for Afghan drug lord<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In exchange for Frerichs, Washington handed over\u00a0Bashir Noorzai, a drug lord who was arrested in 2005 and sentenced in 2009 to life in prison on heroin trafficking charges for trafficking $50 million of heroin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter long negotiations, U.S. citizen Mark Frerichs was handed over to an American delegation, and that delegation handed over (Bashar Noorzai) to us today at Kabul airport,\u201d Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi said at a press conference in Kabul alongside Noorzai. \u201cWe witnessed the wonderful ceremony of one of our compatriots returning home.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Noorzai was given a hero\u2019s welcome by the new Afghan government of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan (IEA). (Image Credit: Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Noorzai also briefly addressed the same news conference and said: \u201cI am proud to be in the capital of my country among my brothers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Afghanistan&#8217;s acting foreign minister Muttaqi said that the Taliban \u201cis <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/asia-pacific\/taliban-release-american-engineer-mark-frerichs-prisoner-swap-acting-foreign-min-2022-09-19\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">ready to solve problems by negotiation<\/span><\/a> with all including the United States.\u201d Muttaqi said the prisoner swap \u201c<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/afghanistan-veterans-kabul-taliban-f8e9985237f10c341fb5af252bf7c41c?taid=63284d3101a59c00017e5fa6&amp;utm_campaign=TrueAnthem&amp;utm_medium=AP&amp;utm_source=Twitter\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">can be a new chapter<\/span><\/a> between Afghanistan and the United States, this can open a new door for talks between both countries,\u201d Muttaqi said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. Navy veteran from Illinois was kidnapped in late January 2020 while doing construction contract work in Afghanistan. He went missing before the U.S. signed a peace deal with the Taliban.
