{"id":10832,"date":"2022-08-10T20:21:03","date_gmt":"2022-08-10T18:21:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/?p=10832"},"modified":"2022-08-10T20:21:56","modified_gmt":"2022-08-10T18:21:56","slug":"us-pledges-largest-arms-delivery-with-1-billion-security-assistance-package-for-ukraine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/us-pledges-largest-arms-delivery-with-1-billion-security-assistance-package-for-ukraine\/","title":{"rendered":"US pledges largest arms delivery with $1 billion security assistance package for Ukraine"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>The Biden administration announced another $1 billion in new military aid for Ukraine \u2014 the largest weapons package yet since Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion began in late February. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis is the largest single drawdown of U.S. arms and equipment utilizing this authority to date,\u201d Colin Kahl, the undersecretary of defense for policy, said announcing the new weapons shipment. \u201cThe package provides a significant amount of additional ammunition, weapons and equipment \u2014\u00a0the types of which the Ukrainian people are using so effectively to defend their country.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On August 8, the Department of Defense (DoD) announced the eighteenth Presidential Drawdown of equipment valued at up to $1 billion in additional security assistance to meet Ukraine\u2019s critical security and defense needs. Presidential drawdown authority (or PDA) allows the U.S. president in certain circumstances to withdraw weapons, ammunitions and material from existing U.S. military stocks and provide that to other nations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe United States continues to work with its allies and partners to provide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/ukraine\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Ukraine<\/span><\/a> with capabilities to meet its evolving battlefield requirements and our allies and partners have stepped up to provide billions of dollars in their own assistance,\u201d Kahl said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest security assistance package doesn\u2019t contain additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/himars\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">HIMARS<\/span><\/a> launch systems but it includes additional munitions for systems the U.S. has already sent to Ukraine.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest $1 billion security package includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS)<\/li><li>\u00a075,000 rounds of 155mm artillery ammunition<\/li><li>\u00a020 120mm mortar systems and 20,000 rounds of 120mm mortar ammunition<\/li><li>\u00a0Munitions for National Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile Systems (NASAMS)<\/li><li>1,000 Javelin and hundreds of AT4 anti-armor systems<\/li><li>50 armored medical treatment vehicles<\/li><li>Claymore anti-personnel munitions<\/li><li>C-4 explosives, demolition munitions, and demolition equipment<\/li><li>Medical supplies, including first aid kits, bandages, monitors, and other equipment.<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Army-M142-high-mobility-artillery-rocket-system.jpeg?ssl=1\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Army-M142-high-mobility-artillery-rocket-system.jpeg?resize=836%2C448&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"U.S. Army M142 high mobility artillery rocket system\" class=\"wp-image-10828\" width=\"836\" height=\"448\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Army-M142-high-mobility-artillery-rocket-system.jpeg?w=690&amp;ssl=1 690w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Army-M142-high-mobility-artillery-rocket-system.jpeg?resize=300%2C161&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 836px) 100vw, 836px\" \/><\/a><figcaption><em><sup>A U.S. Army M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) launches ordnance during RED FLAG-Alaska 21-1 at Fort Greely, Alaska, Oct. 22, 2020. (Image Credit: Air Force Senior Airman Beaux Hebert)<\/sup><\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>One type of munition the United States has sent to Ukraine for use in the HIMARS is the Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ir-ia.com\/news\/tag\/gmlrs\/\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">GMLRS<\/span><\/a>, which are precision-guided systems with a range of about 70km. \u201cThe munitions themselves, these GMLRS &#8230; are having a very profound effect,&#8221; he said. \u201cThis is a 200-pound warhead, it&#8217;s kind of the equivalent of an airstrike, frankly \u2014\u00a0a precision-guided airstrike. These are GPS-guided munitions. They&#8217;ve been very effective in hitting things that previously the Ukrainians had difficulty hitting reliably.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kahl said the Ukrainians have used the HIMARS along with provided GMLRS rockets to hit Russian command and control nodes, sustainment and logistics hubs, and key radar systems.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall, the United States has committed around <a href=\"https:\/\/media.defense.gov\/2022\/Aug\/09\/2003052810\/-1\/-1\/0\/UKRAINE-FACT-SHEET%e2%80%93AUG-8.PDF\"><span style=\"color:#ac0707\" class=\"has-inline-color\">$9.8 billion in security assistance to Ukraine<\/span><\/a> since Biden came into office.
